Barceló Funchal Oldtown 5 stars

Hotel in Se, Funchal

Well located in the centre of Funchal, Barceló Funchal Oldtown provides air-conditioned rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, free WiFi and a fitness centre. The location is amazing. As soon as you step in the lobby, the fragrance and the vibrant ambiance of the hotel captures you. The staff is incredibly helpful. They answer your questions even before you arrive. When we were there, they helped out with most of the restaurant choices and excursion reservations. The outdoor dining area of Barcelo Funchal Oldtown is also the host to a live street concert on most of the lunch times. Around the corner, you can taste the best gelato on the island. If you go on a private cab tour around the island, make sure to ask for “Chico the driver” as your personal tour guide and yellow cab driver who speaks more than 3 languages and takes you around the history and contemporary status of the island through his vast knowledge. We will definitely book Barcelo Funchal Oldtown for our next visit to Madeira.

Aqua Natura Madeira 4 stars

Hotel in Porto Moniz

The 4-star Aqua Natura Madeira offers elegant rooms with Atlantic Ocean views in the fishing village of Porto Moniz, 45 km north of Funchal city centre. It offers a sauna on site. I liked the location. It was next to the natural pools and you get free access once a day. They had a lot of vouchers and free options to do so that was amazing. The room was always super clean. The staff were helpful and friendly. They help you with renting a car and your drive back to the airport. The view was amazing from the room. The breakfast was good. We stayed there a whole week. The island is small enough to stay at one place. You can explore the island by renting a car.

Hotel Quinta Do Furao 4 stars

Hotel in Santana

Featuring stunning views of the north-east coast of the Island of Madeira and the surrounding mountains, this 4-star hotel offers rooms with free Wi-Fi and a balcony. I can say that if we come to Madeira again then it is because of this place and I mean it. This place has everything you need for your perfect stay: a breathtaking view from the balcony (make sure your room has it), a cosy modern room with all the necessary facilities (minibar, safe, coffee machine, tea kettle, tea, coffee capsules, bathrobes, slippers etc.), lovely spa with pools, sauna and hot tub, great breakfast with lots of varieties, outstanding restaurant with friendly staff, delicious local cuisine and stunning view from the terrace, wonderful bar with live music and top standard cocktails and local spirits. I would like to thank especially Marlene, the bartender, who was extremely helpful and caring, telling interesting stories and facts about Madeira, making our stay unforgettable. Also, Aurea , who showed us a wine cellar and made a short tour even if it was closed yet. We are so thankful to all the team including reception who is doing the utmost job to make their guests feel welcomed and I am sure that the manager is reading this. You have done everything right, your hotel is like a big family where each member takes care of each other and treats the guests as members of the family and we could feel this. I wish you and your team all the best. We will be back one day to experience this hospitality again which is rarely seen around the world.

FAQs about hotels in Madeira Islands

The Island of Eternal Spring

With lush landscapes, brightly coloured flowers and a mild, year-round climate, it’s easy to see why Madeira is called the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’. Its interior is mountainous, so most resorts are coastal, many at the foot of steep cliffs.

One such resort is Paul do Mar, a fishing village known for whale watching and surfing, as is Jardim do Mar, on a plateau just east. Nearby Calheta has 2 white sand beaches protected by breakwaters.

The main resort is the capital Funchal. Cascading down slopes, it has the lion’s share of 5-star hotels in Madeira on Booking.com. A cable car ascending into the hills offers fantastic views towards the harbour where cruise liners and ferries from neighbouring Porto Santo island are berthed.

East, Caniço’s sandy beach is nestled between rocky cliffs, while Santa Cruz is the nearest resort to Madeira Airport. Machico is the 2nd biggest city and has the best nightlife outside Funchal, but the best Madeira hotels for families are in quieter resorts such as Porto da Cruz in the north.

Santana is home to the triangular-shaped, thatched houses typical of the island, and twisting mountain roads lead to São Vicente, an attractive hill town with red-roofed houses. By the north-western tip is the village of Porto Moniz whose offshore rocks shelter natural rock pools.
