we upgraded our room to an ocean view suite which was magical. The view space and services was top notch. The location fantastic and in walking distance to all major Funchal Destinations. We appreciated that there was free parking although not a great lot, one was provided. There is also a paid lot that was fairly priced. It is a vast hotel. The breakfast, Resturant taverna and pub were convenient and provided delicious meals.

Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It is an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as its slopes and colourful towns.
Founded in 1424, its position allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbour, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.
With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos of Madeira. Accommodation located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, is also available for those wanting to avoid the rush.
Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.
Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guest house, Booking.com offers a wide range of Funchal accommodation.
Most interesting place. Neraby gardens stunning and the city itself clean, bright and with plentiful restaurants etc.
However, the roads are now so good that the whole of the island is within reach within one hour's driving and there is plenty to do and see from the peaks to the coast.
We had brilliant weather for january - only one bad day in Funchal but made up for by spending that day in Porto Moniz on the north coast where it was warm and sunny.
There can be four seasons in a day in Madeira - a car enables you to make the most of the island.
Best restaurant by a long way O Portao in the Old Town just past the church.

Funchal is a beautiful city full of things to do.
Funchal is a beautiful city full of things to do. I enjoyed the botanical gardens and the canoe car trip up to see them. Wandering around the old town was lovely, seeing the churches and other buildings. Funchal is very hilly so if you are walking around be prepared but this allows for amazing views.

Wonderfull place all year. Not too hot and not too cold.
Wonderfull place all year. Not too hot and not too cold. In Old Town it is easy to walk or take the bus. If You want to exersize You can walk the steep roads up and down to Monte or run at the harbor front. Beautiful parks and easy acces in bus or car to all beautiful places on the island.
Hundreds of restaurants serving international food or fresh local fish and vegetables. The place is not for people lying on the beach all day, because no sand beach available. Lots of beautiful levadas and caminhos available for people in good shape and condition.

We visited from Dec 27th - Jan 3, from the UK.
We visited from Dec 27th - Jan 3, from the UK. On our first few days we had warm temperatures (up to 23°C) then anywhere from 18- 20°C for the rest of the time. No rain and plenty of sunshine! Colder once you start going up into the hills though...
The Christmas lights around Funchal were stunning. London level style street lighting, with Vegas level commitment! Every little alley and lane was lit up, including the surround hills. Just amazing. I struggle to imagine what it would look like without all the lighting!
We hadn't planned this trip around NYE, but once we were there (and as part of the booking research) realised that the fireworks were going to be a big deal- and they really were. A great party atmosphere with fireworks coming from the cruise ships, all along the water front and right up into the hills. Spectacular!
Local buses are great and were were able to see other parts of the island using this service. We usually hire cars, but many of the hikes were did were point to point so needed buses (taxis also and option) to get to different places. Was also nice to be able to look around and not have eyes glued to the road...
Lots of great hiking opportunities within 1-1.5 hour bus trip - Levadas trials, mountain walks and coastal. Check All Trails app or Visit Madeira website to make sure trials are open before going (one of the ones we wanted to do had some inaccessible parts due to recent fires- glad we checked before going.
Would definitely visit again in December!

The weather during the Christmas period was around 16 - 17 C average however it felt much warmer especially in sunny days. Driving in and around Funchal was fairly easy but the roads do get steep in the moutains. We have had the privilege in witnessing the annual Christmas market night on 23rd December. It appeared all of the residents in Finchal came out into the the streets around the Farmers Market! There were many folk music and dance on the streets all over the places. We have tried a few local seafood restaurents recommended by host and car rental shop and we were not disappointed.

This hotel really was the perfect break away for myself and my mother, lots of really lovely restaurants and bars close by, and a short walk/bus ride away from the Old Town. The view of the sea and pool from our balcony was magnificent, sunsets were very special. There were great options for breakfast and staff were friendly. Loved the saltwater pool and lots of areas to sunbathe. It was our first time in Madeira and we both said we would return and happily would stay at the Pestana Carlton again.
Excellent location and fantastic views towards the sea, about 15 mins down to the main area and even closer to the Old Town. The apartment was well equipped and had everything that we needed for our stay, and was decorated well. The instructions for checking in were really helpful and clear and the employees very helpful if/when we needed them! Would definitely recommend if we visited Funchal and Madeira again!
The apartment was spacious, light and well equipped. The location was excellent being right next to the old town with its shops, restaurants and bars. The apartment was also very convenient for public transport and the pick up point for tours. The hosts were lovely and informative providing great bar and restaurant recommendations. We loved Madeira and would look to stay again if we returned.
Location, location, location - tough it would be hard to find a place to park a car. It is close to the old town, close to SAM bus terminal with buses to the airport. For the price it was a reasonable option for our last night in Funchal and Madeira.
We also had an excellent night sleep - it was on a weekend tough, so no noises from a nearby school.
This hotel is stunning. Every attention to detail has been thought of.
Beautifully decorated from the moment you set foot inside.
In a busy Funchal, it has a calmness about it. We stayed two nights after a busy week of walking Madeira and it was very relaxing.
