I lived in Wellington for 2 years ,55 years ago .! Took my adult daughter & young Granddaughter for a quick North Island trip ,Wellington ease of getting around & wonderful architecture ,new with the old is just marvellous . Zealandia an absolute must see ,a wonderful achievement for the growth of threatened spices . Cheers Phyl
Te Papa museum was a must see & even better being free! Wellington Cable car was a great & cheap way to see the city view & botanical gardens. Inter-Island Ferry was a lovely what to cross from North island to South island.
Visit here for best scenery, beauty, awe in the north island. Such a stunning town with laid-back but funky vibe. The forest on the mountain is some of the best in the country. Ruapehu itself is magnificent and stands over the town. You will not be let down by this magic place!
Paihia is a delightful small town at top of North Island. Plenty of motels and restaurants along beach front road to suit all pockets. Good selection of local shops and nice buzzy atmosphere even at the end of summer. Small beach and pleasant swimming. Frequent ferry crossings over to Russell. We came by car but there appeared to be local transport available. Excellent Waitangi Maori Treaty Centre at far end of town - we’ll worth a visit!
Rotorua is a great tourist spot in the north island and well worth a visit especially for the cultural side and outside activities. You get used to the smell so don't let that worry you.
Love Rotorua, a definite highlight of the North island. Did a canopy zip line tour, saw Hobbiton, went to a Maori village, a kiwi house, Redwood tree tour and saw the geysers and mud pools
The natural beauty and the tourist attractions in and around Kaitaia makes it a must see place if you plan to visit the north island in New Zealand. The 90 mike beach and Cape Reinga need a special mention along the the idyllic white sand beaches on the way to Cape Reinga
The burgers in Wellington are amazing - I definitely recommend Burger Liqour and Ekim. It's colder than pretty much anywhere else in the North Island so pack some thermals. It's also beautiful and the public transport is amazing!
Napier is a great town for shopping, wine tasting, beautiful Art Deco architecture and of course the excellent views from Te Mata Peak which is well worth up driving there. Visit Kidnappers Bay and take a tractor tour. Napier has lots of coffee shops for your morning or afternoon smoko and trendy bars and restaurants to have a great evening out. There are also plenty of walks and good biking tracks to enjoy. The beach is always close and relaxing to wind down. The are many places to stay in good quality accommodation. It's the most sophisticated town on the South East Coast of the North Island.
The best place to do all fun activities in North Island. There are plenty of places to eat and stay in Rotorua and all places to visit are easily accesible. Dont miss out the 3D trick gallery, 3 lakes(with a view point of both blue and green lake), skyline rotorua(incl luge and skyswing) and zorb.
Ohakune
This apartment has been designed with love and is beautiful! It is very obviously cared for, maintained and so well appointed! It is spotlessly clean! The wifi was excellent and the food and treats left really are a treat! The bed was comfy and it was a joy to stay there! The communication with the host was excellent and we were able to just let ourselves in. It is in a very quiet area but only about a 15 minute drive into Ohakune. I will definitely book here again for a break when travelling up the North Island.
Hamilton
I blindly booked with the Auto Lodge Motel and I have to say that is one of the best motels in all of the North Island of New Zealand. The entire room was complete with up-to-date amenities with certain attention to detail that made the space more comfortable to be in. The bed was amazing with the variety of soft/firm pillows which enabled me to get the proper rest I needed. The bathroom was fantastic with amazing water pressure and heat. I will be definitely booking again - I almost stayed an extra night!
Paihia
The decided to stay at Paihia after a rather hectic tour of New Zealand, south and north island. This was our short rest before the trip back to the Uk. We had initially booked into a hotel in Paihia but after reflection decided to opt for the more quiet option of this accommodation. I think we made the right decision. It was just a comfortable stay with an excellent view and exactly what we needed. It was close enough to enjoy the restaurants and bars of Paihia, but far enough away to be peaceful.
Cambridge
This was one of the last stops on our jolly around north island, staying in a variety of accommodation from motels to fancy hotels. Can honestly say this was one of the nicest and by a long long way, the best value for money. The holiday house has everything you need, their are games for the kids and kind owners. The pool and hot tub were super and the couple keep an immaculate and beautiful garden ***** Breakfast simple and just what we needed. Would recommend.
The property and accommodation were excellent. So close to everything a great base to do day trips in the North Island. We received an upgrade to a 3 bedroom apartment which was amazing, so comfortable everything we needed. The staff were very friendly and helpful nothing was ever too much to ask. Very clean and comfortable beds. The continental breakfast which was included was fabulous. Would highly recommend and would definitely stay again.
Cambridge
Cambridge Retreat was an excellent place to spend our first night in New Zealand. Margaret made us feel so welcome. She not only gave us an excellent recommendation for dinner - which was a very short away but also gave us several ideas of places to visit whilst on the north island. Some of which we have already done and have enjoyed immensely. Our room was great as was our breakfast. Thank you Margaret for a great stay.
Wonderful little gem of a hotel, so pleased we stopped off here during our North Island road trip. Our room was exceptionally clean and comfortable, with a sea view. Reception staff were pleasant and helpful. The interior design is very quirky which just adds to the charm of the hotel. The adjoining West End Precinct provides all the restaurants and bars guests require, which also offers a room service option.
Ohope Beach
Wonderful location. Ohope Beach region is one of the best spots we visited on NZ north island. The apartment is even nicer than the photos indicate. Our host arranged the "best view" of the available apartments :) ...also, I always appreciate the consumables available in accommodation that I book, i.e, paper-towel in the kitchen, ground coffee and a plunger and a generous jug of milk :)
Russell
I don’t know how this accommodation could be any better - it’s location on The Strand, the amazing view of the bay from the patio, the delicious, homemade breakfast delivered to your apartment every day, the most gracious, thougtful host. It was just wonderful. I told my husband, cancel the rest of our roadtrip around the North Island, let’s just stay here. Highly recommend!
Everything. The rooms had everything I needed, free parking outside. It had a pool and good beer in the bar. Nice little courtyard. The owners obviously care, and there’s attention to detail. It’s the best hotel I’ve stayed in and I’ve done the whole of North Island. I’ve stayed in a lot more expensive and fancier ones, but I prefer this one all day long.
It is truly a perfect location to form a base when exploring the bay of Islands and the top of New Zealand's north island. Unit has all the facilities you need, and the owners were extremely pleasant.they also provide a collection of tourist pamphlets for attractions in the area to help you make the most of your stay. Highly recommended.
Whitianga
The Crow's Nest was the highlight of our 16 day tour around 6 different locations in the North Island. Staff were always available and extremely helpful. Our apartment was exceptional in every way. Cannot fault this accommodation on anything. It is 10 out of 10 in every way. Will certainly stay here again.
Raglan
This was a very comfortable studio apartment within walking distance of the town of Raglan. It was a perfect first stop on our roadtrip around the north island. It was extremely clean. There are blackout curtains. We slept well and recommend Long Street Studio.
Featherston
I stayed in one of the hotel rooms, not the little adjacent campsite or RV hook-up. This is a very nice stop along the road thru the North Island. It was clean, and the little kitchen had everything you'd need. Good bed. Nice little porch. Great hot shower.
Good size apartment 314. Within easy walking distance to the waterfront , museum, etc. Our best stay in one of 4 different lower North Island locations. Would definitely recommend and would stay there again when back in Wellington.
Hamilton
It was probably the nicest homestay I have ever visited and probably the best value for money in the North island. You are treated like a guest in a five star hotel but with the comfort of home!
Whangaroa
Beautiful views and a nice room with a comfortable bed.. great location to explore the north island. Nice to take jacuzzi after a hike up the mountain behind the house.
the staff was great. under duress of the loss of electricity and water.
The room was large and comfortable with a lovely private deck backing onto a green space. The bathroom was well lit and spacious. The bed super comfy. Everything was clean and there was lots of storage space. The proximity to the hot pools and the discount for entry was great. The staff were awesome - friendly, helpful, attentive, welcoming.
