Situated in Kyoto, 800 metres from Heian Shrine, Hotel Material features rooms with free WiFi access. This was our favorite place we stayed on our trip. Material is a great little boutique hotel with lots of charm. By Japan Standards our room was actually fairly large and had a great industrial mixed with Japanese traditional feel to it. Despite facing a major road, road noise was minimal, the location was a short walk from the nearest subway station and was comparatively short walks from many of the top tourist locations in the city. We walk a lot on trips in general (approximately 10 miles a day on average) so of course this is all relative. Our room was a 3rd floor walk up so it probably wouldn't be ideal for those with mobility issues. We ate at Detail ramen, the restaurant that shares the ground floor with the hotel, twice on during our stay and were quite happy with the meals we had! Be sure to look at their hours if you want to make that a part of your stay and keep in mind that the restaurant is cash only and their ticket ordering machine only accepts the older bills (at least at the time of writing this). Overall the hotel staff were very friendly and patient with us when we needed to use google translate for the few things language barrier got in the way of. The premises was quiet and just generally really lovely. It was the only hotel we stayed in during our trip to Japan that we actually felt excited about spending time in. Because we found the room so pleasant we ended up changing around our itinerary a bit to get up early and go out to see and photograph sites before sunrise, come back to the hotel for a mid day rest and nap before going out in the afternoon to evening for more site seeing or shopping. We also spent a couple evenings enjoying some drinks we purchased at the Lawsons about a block away on the rooftop while watching the sun set, talking and reconnecting. For the right kind of traveler this place is an absolute gem in balance between affordability, comfort, and location.

A 10-minute walk from Heian Jingu Shrine, Heian No Mori Kyoto features a public bath and Japanese and buffet restaurants. The air-conditioned rooms include a private bathroom. Very convenient location, bus stop right outside with lots of buses that go all over the city. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Black out curtains so got a good night sleep. Comfortable room and very clean. Picked the random room option and got a twin.

Just a 7-minute walk from Higashiyama Subway Station and Heian Shrine, the completely non-smoking Kyoto Travellers Inn offers bicycle rental, a restaurant and rooms with a flat-screen TV and free... Great location. Friendly staff. There’s a public bath in the basement. Very clean. Comfortable. There’s a self heating kettle in the room, cups and green tea. Quiet area, had no problems with sleep. Convenient stores nearby. Beautiful shrine just few minutes walking away from hotel. There’s a microwave on the first floor for heating your food. Good thick curtains to create darkness for a better sleep. We enjoyed our stay.
