A very traditional Japanese guest house with ultra friendly and accommodating hosts. This property has been in their family for generations and they go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. The meals were excellent and there was an English explanation for each dish served 😊. A big bonus is the short walk to the stairs to climb Mt Haguro. (Not that that makes the stairs any easier!) Featuring free WiFi throughout the property, Yamagata The Takinami offers accommodation in Nanyo, a 6-minute drive from Akayu Station. Guests can enjoy the on-site restaurant. Free private parking is available on site. Everything from the moment we Checked-in was perfect. Its a beautiful old japanese house, with a lot of love and taste renovated. The interior is a mix of western and japanese designers. Every room is unique. The private onsen water was so comforting that even me, as not much a onsen lover, loved it to dip in. We stayed two nights and every morning they offered us some kind of activity. For us it was rice planting and going up to the mountain to see basin of yamagata. Also the owners are very nice and are actively taking care of the guests and support them with informations and tell their long family history in yamagata. the highlight is also the restaurant, you can enjoy highend japanese cuisine, cooked with a lot of passion by using mostly local ingredients from yamagata prefecture in a cool low dimmed counterseating or a private room. Please be hungry cuz you will eat a lot.

Of all the hotels and ryokans I stayed at during my two weeks traveling Japan, the night at Tsukasaya Ryokan was by far my favorite. Mrs. Shoji personally came out and greeted me at my taxi. From that moment onward, I felt as if I was receiving an experience personalized just for me. After showing me to my room, Mrs. Shoji informed me of several local attractions (parks, shrines, temples, etc.) that were lovely to visit prior to returning for dinner.
Every moment of the stay felt thoughtfully crafted and authentic. The food was delicious, containing many dishes that I had never before experienced. The onsen, while small and enclosed, was at just the right temperature and left my skin feeling the best it has in years. The design of the structure was charming and authentic (as best that a foreigner like myself can judge). The staff were friendly and accommodating.

Truly mystical experience. The host couple are very warm and welcoming. The home made meals are amazing, I felt spoilt every morning and night by their cooking. The bathing facilities are basic, but everything you need. The gender separated baths are small, but are very nice and give a great nostalgic feel. Highly recommend

Hosts were extremely helpful and friendly. They made sure we were comfortable with an extra futon, recommended vegetarian places, and showed us the onsen and where to rent equipment. It has a communal vibe, so extroverted people would love it.
Great, old school Japanese place to stay, right next to the gondola - its about a 20meter walk to the gondola entrance! And you can ski down the hill, right to the door. The room was nice and big with traditional tatami and futons. Great staff - the owner speaks really good english and is really helpful - he has great suggestions for everything from Onsen to restaurants etc. They even helped me ship my snowboard with Kuroneko back to Narita.
Very beautiful traditional ryokan, the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. Had a blast snowboarding for the first time and enjoyed the onsen after a whole day out in the cold. Breakfast and dinner are delicious and very large portions.
We loved our stay at Matsuo House. Taka, Oraphin and Yuuchan were amazing hosts. They were so welcoming and made us feel right at home. The rooms are traditiinL tatami rooms, futon beds. The lodge is right beside one of the public onsens and close to the chairlifts. Highlight of our ski trip to Japan. We will be back. Especially loved our morning greetings from 3 yo Yuuchan - "sleep well?" We sure did. Xx
The service was outstanding, this was our first time at a Ryokan and the staff couldn't have been any more helpful. We had to get a little help with the yukata but again the staff were so helpful and patient. Worth the price 100%
Close to the property. Love the private onsen, the host even provides the local milk to the customer to enjoy after soaking in the hot spring. Also the shuttle bus service is pretty handy.
Great service and love the meals and onsen! The area around the property was beautiful in winter. They provide free drinks in the evenings and yukatas for room and meal time use.
The ryokan is really traditionnal and super cool to sleep and have lunch in. The classic tatami rooms and onsens are a must ! It's a delight after a quite hike in the park to chill around in the facilities. There's even an onsen on the roof that we did not try because we checked in too late so we didn't get the info haha Great surprise was also the adaptability to vegan travelers : they made us a fully vegan breakfast that was super good and filling so thanks for that !
