The ryokan offers soothing natural hot spring bath in natural stone tubs and an open-air hot springs bath. A shared lounge features a tatami (woven-straw) floor and view of a Japanese garden. The ryokan also offers free use of bicycles. Everything, from the food to the room. I booked the smallest room which I did not know that there is a private onsen. My meals were in a separated room which I feel is better than having inside my own room. This hotel is worth staying for the experience. There are guests around but I was surprised to not hear any noises. I felt like I was being served as a royalty. The sake that I had, does not have any alcohol smell, it tasted so good and it had a cherry taste to it. I enjoyed the private outdoor onsen and I regretted not trying the public onsen. Also, breakfast usually starts at 730am but I had a train to catch, the hotel offered to serve breakfast at 7am. I was already awake at 5am to enjoy the onsen for the last time. My dinner was at 6pm which was the earliest timing.

The ryokan offers rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. Of all the hotels and ryokans I stayed at during my two weeks traveling Japan, the night at Tsukasaya Ryokan was by far my favorite. Mrs. Shoji personally came out and greeted me at my taxi. From that moment onward, I felt as if I was receiving an experience personalized just for me. After showing me to my room, Mrs. Shoji informed me of several local attractions (parks, shrines, temples, etc.) that were lovely to visit prior to returning for dinner. Every moment of the stay felt thoughtfully crafted and authentic. The food was delicious, containing many dishes that I had never before experienced. The onsen, while small and enclosed, was at just the right temperature and left my skin feeling the best it has in years. The design of the structure was charming and authentic (as best that a foreigner like myself can judge). The staff were friendly and accommodating.

Hosts were extremely helpful and friendly. They made sure we were comfortable with an extra futon, recommended vegetarian places, and showed us the onsen and where to rent equipment. It has a communal vibe, so extroverted people would love it.
- Great hospitality - amazing onsen (both traditional outside the hotel and within the hotel) - yukata - fantastic breakfast
We loved our stay at Matsuo House. Taka, Oraphin and Yuuchan were amazing hosts. They were so welcoming and made us feel right at home. The rooms are traditiinL tatami rooms, futon beds. The lodge is right beside one of the public onsens and close to the chairlifts. Highlight of our ski trip to Japan. We will be back. Especially loved our morning greetings from 3 yo Yuuchan - "sleep well?" We sure did. Xx
The service was outstanding, this was our first time at a Ryokan and the staff couldn't have been any more helpful. We had to get a little help with the yukata but again the staff were so helpful and patient. Worth the price 100%
Best location directly next to the chairlift. Friendly owner. Cozy beds. Great atmosphere in Zao Onsen. Onsen Vouchers for other Ryokan Facilities were highly appreciated.
Close to the property. Love the private onsen, the host even provides the local milk to the customer to enjoy after soaking in the hot spring. Also the shuttle bus service is pretty handy.
Great service and love the meals and onsen! The area around the property was beautiful in winter. They provide free drinks in the evenings and yukatas for room and meal time use.
It’s well located. Close to the most famous onsen in Zao. The rooms are typical ryokan room, but I had to set my own futon. Onsen are great too
Onsen (outdoors is best I think, you over look the waterfall and in our case falling snow). Ryokan style / tatami sleeping arrangements. Generous sized room.
