Zao Onsen
Set in Zao Onsen in the Yamagata region, Takasagoya Ryokan features accommodation with access to a public bath. The 3-star ryokan is 200 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. Perfect hosts, they are so accommodating and kind. They made recommendations about everything I asked, made sure the stay was comfortable and even went above and beyond for me so I can better experience the area (like giving me towels even after I checked out) I highly recommend this place if you’re in Zao Onsen! Will definitely stay again when I’m back.
Tendo Onsen, Tendo
Boasting natural hot spring baths, Hohoemino Kuyufu Tsuruya is located a 15-minute walk from JR Tendo Station, 50 km from Sendai. Dinner and breakfast exceeded expectations. Everyone was so helpful and polite. The room and private onsen was amazing. It was a great way to relax.
Mount Haguro, Tsuruoka
Surrounded by sacred mountains and untouched nature, Tamonkan is housed in a historic Japanese-style building. Complimentary tea and snacks are served to welcome guests. Beautiful building, lovely hosts, delicious food. I would love to visit the area again and stay at Tamonkan.

Yunohama Onsen, Tsuruoka
Ikkyu -Seaside Hotel- is a ryokan located in the Yunohama Onsen district of Tsuruoka. The 3-star ryokan features sea views and is 4 km from Kamo Aquarium. Amazing location by the sea. We watched a perfect sunset from our dinner table and walked on a beautiful beach in the morning. The staff are very kind, helpful, and friendly. Dinner and breakfast were fantastic. Cold green tea is available outside the baths. A probiotic drink was offered in the morning.
Kaminoyama Onsen, Kaminoyama
Situated in Kaminoyama, 17 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Oyado Morinone offers accommodation with a sauna, a hot spring bath and a public bath. With garden views, this accommodation provides a... This was the most elegant and restful stay of my life. Food is incredible - deserves a bib gourmand! Rooms are large and comfortable with a view. Onsen is lovely. The best is the free alcohol and hot drink service in the evenings around the fireplace. Definitely stay here if you can! It’s once in a lifetime type stuff
Akayu Onsen, Nanyo
Featuring free WiFi throughout the property, Yamagata The Takinami offers accommodation in Nanyo, a 6-minute drive from Akayu Station. Guests can enjoy the on-site restaurant. First and foremost: This is not a hotel for extended stay. This is an unforgettable experience for a day. You are expected to mostly stay at this traditional hotel and relax as much as possible. The rooms are spacious, and the beds are comfortable. Each room has its own outside onsen (hot spring bath). Tip: take a room on the first floor, those bathtubs are carved out of a solid block of stone. The water itself is very hot, but feels absolutely divine and did wonders for my skin. The meals are crazy good. The dinner menu was ~10 courses with locally sourced ingredients. The waiter, general manager and owner took turns explaining in intricate detail what each course meant, where it came from, and why they chose to present it to us. I'm pretty sure the owner also mentioned the cook had a Michelin star - which would explain the unconventional, but delicious creations. The breakfast was Japanese-style, and also very good. I'm not sure what else I should add - the intricate eye for detail and attention the staff gave us (I felt so bad seeing the small Japanese woman carry my heavy luggage to my room, but I wasn't allowed to carry it myself, haha); the free bar with the expensive alcohol at night; the modern interpretation of old history... Not to mention the other included amenities: a shuttle bus, an early tour, live soba making, sake tasting [...] It is pricey, but again: you are NOT paying for a simple hotel night, you are paying for an experience. Full recommendation.
Yutagawa Onsen, Tsuruoka
Tsukaya Ryokan is a accommodation with a history of over 300 years. All rooms feature tatami (woven-straw) floors. Of all the hotels and ryokans I stayed at during my two weeks traveling Japan, the night at Tsukasaya Ryokan was by far my favorite. Mrs. Shoji personally came out and greeted me at my taxi. From that moment onward, I felt as if I was receiving an experience personalized just for me. After showing me to my room, Mrs. Shoji informed me of several local attractions (parks, shrines, temples, etc.) that were lovely to visit prior to returning for dinner. Every moment of the stay felt thoughtfully crafted and authentic. The food was delicious, containing many dishes that I had never before experienced. The onsen, while small and enclosed, was at just the right temperature and left my skin feeling the best it has in years. The design of the structure was charming and authentic (as best that a foreigner like myself can judge). The staff were friendly and accommodating.
Mount Haguro, Tsuruoka
Situated among spiritual mountains with a rich history, Hagurokan offers traditional Japanese-style guest rooms in a historic building. We had a lovely stay at Hagurokan. Excellent Japanese hospitality- we felt very welcomed and cared for. The ryokan itself is beautiful, and the traditional meals were so good. Every dish was delicious and thoughtfully prepared. The bed was very comfortable. Highly recommend!
