This was our fourth trip to Japan and we've stayed in many ryokans. This is one of our favorites. The space we stayed at was huge. It was a two-story stand alone building. The seats looked out onto the courtyard with a pond and a lot of trees, which was very peaceful. I'm usually not the type to stay in my hotel/ryokan all day, but this place tempted me to do so due to the serenity of the courtyard.
There were two private onsen that were easy to access due to the small number of guests that stay here.
The food was fabulous.
While walking around one morning I found a hiking trail that led up to castle ruins. The next morning I hiked up to the ruins and down the other side and came out near the Moss Land.

This is a gem in the mountains not to be missed. There was tea and a snack waiting for us every afternoon in our room. We could see the beautifully carved temple and gardens from our room window. The meals were delicious! Many little dishes to make your mouth water served in our private dining room by the hosts who were exceedingly polite and friendly and explained what everything was. The baths could be taken privately with a partner. The bath was very clean as were the accommodations. A short hike to the top of the mountain gave beautiful views of the ocean and the Daisen volcanic mountain. This also went by the beautiful temple, which offers meditation sessions. There were two small stores nearby selling delicious sweets nearby. We cannot say enough good things about kouyoukan ryokan and it's hosts! A wonderful place to slow down and relax.

Great onsen-nice breakfast-spacious rooms. great valye for money
It was amazing with tatami mats in the hotel and not only in rooms. It felt good walking on them in the lobby and everywhere else. We liked very much onsen as well. I was there every evening during our stay.
Kitchen is nice with complimentary coffee and tea. Everything else was to my satisfaction. Futon beds over tatami are harder than a mattress but of course it's what was advertised so I'm ok with it.
This hotel is just stunning. Japanese-style, with tatami floors and a great onsen, sublime breakfast, perfect amenities and extras such as manga library, it is worth a visit in itself.
A great way to experience tatami mat bedroom. Everything was great except for the lack ventilation toilet. The house was tip top clean. Owner was friendly. Very near to the station and almost everything is a walk away. The futon was comfy. Room was warm with heater. Very peaceful area too.
Very, very, very beautiful ryokan. The owner already greeted us at the entrance and was extremely friendly. The room was also beautiful and made you feel like living in Edo period Japan. The onsen was very relaxing, and after it, my partner was offered to wear a nice yukata for dinner. The food was extraordinary (although it could mostly not be adjusted for my admittedly picky partner, see below), both in terms of taste and in the way it was presented. I would definitely recommend this ryokan anytime to any traveller.
Great location, the staff is extremely kind and welcoming, the room (double + tatami area) is comfortable. The onsen is small, but very pleasant
Hoshi Ryokan was a warmly welcomed few days …my good fortune was to coincide with Tsuwano’s traditional music and dance festival….the ryokan was positively helpful..I felt looked out for as have only a few phrases in Japanese…delicious food beautifully presented with a range of local sakes…tatami mats and futon in a gorgeous room..
The breakfast was definitely worth paying extra for, and the rooftop onsen was fantastic. They also had a very nice sauna that kept a stable 92 degrees celsius and a cold water bath that I really appreciated. Upon entering the hotel, all guests had to remove their shoes, and walking around barefoot or wearing only socks felt really nice on the tatami mats covering the floor around the entire hotel.
