The rooms are beautiful, the view is amazing, the staff are absolutely lovely. The private hot springs are great. This place is very charming - even magical. Experiencing Biwako Hanakaido felt like experiencing proper Japanese traditions/customs. It felt like a privilege. It's a truly rare and amazing experience that isn't easy to come by. I highly recommend spending a night or a few here.

長浜城下 町屋ホテル 和乃リトリートひといき features a sauna and free private parking, and is within 14 km of Hikone Castle and 8.6 km of Maibara Station. Our room was wonderful. The amenities were thoughtful and high quality. The host was extremely friendly and treated us to a tour of beautiful Nagahama.

Set 46 km from Sanzen-in Temple, Marumo Ryokan offers 1-star accommodation in Takashima and features a garden. A public bath is available for guests. Staff were exceptional and breakfast was authentic Japanese experience.

Located in Hikone, within less than 1 km of Hikone Castle and 7.2 km of Maibara Station, Honmachi Juku provides accommodation with a garden and free WiFi as well as free private parking for guests who... The homemade Japanese breakfasts were phenomenal and a very good value. Almost unbelievable. Each day was different, with a healthy balance of vegetables, proteins, and carbs (rice). Authentic, and served by a wonderful woman.

Only a 5-minute drive from JR Ogoto Onsen Station with the complimentary shuttle, hotel Yuzanso features Japanese-style rooms with a private open-air hot spring bath and spectacular views of Biwako... Great get away to relax and unwind. Hot springs, private and public were fantastic. Only reserved breakfast and the food was excellent. Room was very large looking out to lake Biwa. Hotel staff were very helpful and informative. The free shuttle to and from the hotel was also a plus.

Biwako Ryokusuitei offers Japanese-style/Western rooms with Lake Biwako views, a flat-screen TV and free Wi-Fi. It is a wonderful and relaxing environment and allows you to enjoy the best onsen experience. The hotel staff organised the shuttle bus for us even though it passed 6pm to ensure we made it to our dinner reservation. The food provided was 10/10, possibly one of the best meals we had in Japan ! And I forgot an item when I left the hotel, the staff just mailed it to my next hotel within the next day. Will definitely come back!

Featuring 1-star accommodation, Tobaya Ryokan is set in Hikone, 1.5 km from Hikone Castle and 7.7 km from Taga-taisha Shrine. This ryokan features a garden. Very traditional feel, hosts gave a lot of space but were readily available when required. Hikone is a lovely area to cycle. I cycled to the next town Taga with the free bicycle (believe you may need to book early if it's peak season) and stopped at Patisserie violet. The hamburg restaurant nearby was superb. For omi beef Ikkyu (mid range price) was delicious. Breakfast is recommended!

16 km from Enryaku-ji Temple, Yumotokan offers a recently renovated 4-star accommodation in the Ogoto Onsen district of Otsu. Onsens were awesome. Kaiseki dinners were ok. Room was huge by Japan standards.

Ebisusou is located in Takashima, 39 km from Ruriko-in Temple, 41 km from Enryaku-ji Temple, as well as 42 km from Mount Hiei. The place is a little bit odd yes, but it’s a wonderful example of a traditional Japanese hospitality (even if the building doesn’t look traditional… but 70s) the hot bath was one of the best I ever had in Japan and the food was incredible. And I paid only 8250 yen for a half course stay (1 person). And the owner did his best to explain everything (with a digital language translator).
