Kamaishi
Hamabeno Ryouriyado Houraikan provides a public bath and an open-air bath, as well as air-conditioned accommodation in Kamaishi, 1.3 km from Kamaishi Recovery Memorial Stadium. This 3-star ryokan offers a 24-hour front desk and a lift. There is a restaurant serving Asian cuisine, and free private parking is available. Wow, what a treat. The resilience and personal story of the owner on the triple disaster that saw a tsunami destroy her business and hometown deeply moved me. This hotel is the cleanest I have ever been in and the food might be the best I have ever had in Japan over 19 trips since 2008. The hotel is basically new as is the rest of the town. The tsunami prevention measures and safety plans are palpable everywhere and watching the owner’s presentation with video will shock and horrify you. She is so positive though and there is merchandise in the room that shows her face and the word “fight” to delineate her personal fight to restore her town and business to their formal glory. they also speak of the rugby World Cup which was held in Kamaishi and symbolizes their returns to their new normal after total destruction by the tsunami. They have a room for a single traveler which is super nice. Most places make you pay for double occupancy regardless. the price is super affordable especially considering the high quality of the facilities. the public bath features an indoor and outdoor bath that overlook the sea between a few trees. it’s tranquil and lovely at all times of the day. I was amazed by the food. This is a fishing town so the seafood is super fresh and you can taste the difference. they also had some of the best soy sauce (shoyu) I had ever tasted and I brought a bottle home. I didn’t want to leave. These were among the nicest people and they accommodated a non-Japanese. I will be back because I want to show the resilience to my friends. it’s a great life lesson for how to bounce back after the unimaginable. the proprietor is now one of my heroes.

Very easy to find, they even hung a plate with my name on the door. I could basically use the entire second floor. The owner took me by car to a dinner place, the hot springs and to the train station. Very kind! Breakfast was very generous as well.
Very good service and infrastructure! The hotel had a great onsen with sauna etc. Really good! The room was nice and correct for this category! The people were super friendly and helpful! I would really recommend this hotel
Very friendly staff, nice onsen on-site. Clean room, we only stayed one night, they also offer lots for breakfast.
Great price-quality relationship. The hotel is well equipped, the staff was very polite and helpful even if they did not speak English, and the location is handy as there are several restaurants and supermarkets nearby. It was nice to have the onsen, which is large enough for the amount of people we have seen.
This Dormy Inn is more than the basic business hotel. You have the usual clean (for one person in even quite spacious) room, but on top of that there is so much more. You have the rooftop onsen, after which you get an ice cream, and there are free ramen if you feel like a midnight snack.
Five star service in a five star ryokan. Worth the price. Free yukata with different sizes and design available for guests. Very peaceful ryokan. Wish we could stay longer to explore the surrounding nature. Kaiseki dinner and breakfast was amazing. Staff was so attentive to our requests and took the time asking about our dietary requirements. Massage chairs available for guests to use. Loved the Indoor and outdoor public bath. Highly recommended for those who wants a luxury ryokan experience.
Small Ryokan. Well located near the sea. Excellent food. Nice room and wonderful Onsen on the roof with a sea-view. on the evening, we listened to the Lady owner telling us her own story surviving the 2011 tsunami and helping dozen of people the following days. Her story was really emotional and she is a true heroine. I am glad we met her and I am very happy to spend one night in this hotel to help local economy.
Everything. The host was very friendly and warm welcome. Large room, classic japanese, and comfortable beds (Tatami plus futon, what more do you need?). Close to sightseeing spots. Excellent chef, breakfast was majestic. I wish could have stayed longer. Feel like family, suitable for those who miss their hometown lol
Traditional style accommodation, gives you the chance to sleep in a futon on the tatami, wear a yukata, and utilise shared bathroom facility, or sento. It is worth the experience 😊 it's reasonably close to Hiraizumi station (about 10 minutes walk) and the host very kindly tried to accomodate for my vegan requirements for breakfast. Bathroom and toilets were clean.
Central location, 7 minutes walk from the station. really good value for the $$$ - staff was extremely helpful, we had alll the amenities in the room (yukata, toiletries, slippers). There is a washing room and a really nice onsen! Hotel provides free noodles and ice cream!
