If you are hiking the Queen Charlotte track, the Blue Water Lodge in Endeavour Inlet should be your first choice of accommodation. We spent 2 nights there in March 2018, and the owner is a lovely host and delightful cook. Blue Water Lodge is an excellent starting point for the Queen Charlotte Track if you are arriving in the evening. Rod will transport you to the start of the track at Ship's Cove, stopping along the way to fish for blue cod, which he will serve you for dinner on your 2nd night when you arrive back at the lodge. We rated our dinners at Blue Water Lodge among the highlights of our 3 1/2 week South Island odyssey.
Our family thoroughly enjoyed our 2 day stay at Wanaka. Our 17 & 14 year old sons had a fantastic time at Puzzling World and base camp rock climbing, whilst my husband and I enjoyed the beautiful scenery whilst driving and walking around the area. We found the locals to be friendly and helpful providing excellent service. We particularly enjoyed talking with Mark at Southern Wild, his local knowledge was invaluable and he was a top bloke to talk to. The boys loved the real NZ fish n chips and squid rings, while a highlight for us was the amazingly delicious meal we had at sasonoki japanese restaurant. I would defiantly recommend a visit to Wanaka when visiting NZ South Island. There are loads of things to do and it’s an easy drive from Queenstown and if returning to Queenstown I would highly recommend going through Cardrona, the view going down the mountain is sensational and you see planes up close through the mountain ranges coming in to land at Queenstown airport.
Whale watch trip is a must do we were lucky enough to spot a blue whale plus orcas, dolphins and seals.everything is in easy distance to walk or drive if you have mobility problems no problems parking.Coopers catch serves the best fish and chips in the South Island, always ask for Blue cod,its the best local fish!
I couldn`t with any honesty suggest anyone should visit INVERCARGILL. I have travelled fairly extensively throughout both North and SOUTH ISLANDS and INVERCARGILL is the only place I have been to,that offered tourists absolutely nothing.
Amazing 5 nights after travelling around South Island in the motor home. Very touristy and didn't see much of a family vibe happening, just backpackers ready to party.
To save time, explore the town first. Have a walk and enjoy the view. Try the food and enjoy the wine. Then have a drive out of town and explore the rest of South Island take a hike, do sky dive a trip to Milford maybe. It will all be worth it
Driving out to Akaroa was really the best part of our stay in Christchurch. Because it’s a city that shuts early - all shops and museums shut by 5 mostly we didn’t get to experience that during our stay. Given how much there is to see and do in the South Island it is difficult to spend more time in Christchurch although we did enjoy the food at Fiddlesticks and our stay at the George, we preferred to leave early and head out to Kaikoura.
A funky little town, similar to Wellington in its arts and youthfulness, but with a more family feel. Great cafes. Lots to see and do and enjoy. Beautiful drives and beaches around town. Lots of attractions to see. Definitely worth checking out the Albatross - they’re amazing! Penguins are also good. One of my favourite towns in the South Island, for sure
A great place to visit with a wide range of art and craft spots. Still autumn compared to the rest of South Island. Great coastline spots to explore. Good range of cafes
One of the best places in the south island to visit the people are so friendly a beautiful place relaxing yet so much to do and see your stay always is never long enough before you know it its time to leave bugga lol
Te Anau
Kerrie was extremely helpful and booked the most wonderful day trips to Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound for us prior to our arrival. This extra service meant we were collected at the door and didn’t have to endure the long drive to Milford and stopped at all the scenic views along the way. Everything in the room was quality and beautifully decorated. This was definitely the best motel that we stayed in during our three weeks travelling in the South Island of New Zealand. Brian and Julie Australia
Wanaka
Fantastic hostel, best that I stayed in during my time on South Island. Newly renovated so bedrooms were clean (room set up for 3 bedder is a bit odd - the end of my bed was directly touching the end of someone else's bed) and bathroom clean. Highlight has got to be location (right next to New World supermarket, 1min walk to the lakefront and resturants) and the kitchen facility (sparkling, huge and has everything you need). Wish I could've stayed here for longer.
We stayed here for one night on our travels around the south island. The hotel is really well located to the centre of the town with plentiful car parking. The staff were friendly and the accommodation comfortable and similar to the motel style of many hotels in New Zealand. Breakfast and dinner was included and was pleasant. The price is a little higher than we would pay for similar accommodation elsewhere but given the location was good value.
Dunedin
Aria on Bank has been our favourite place to stay whilst visiting the South Island. Gorgeous loft apartment that is short walking distance to the Dunedin Botanic Gardens, cafes, restaurants, shopping centre and even a cool little bar called Inch Bar, that has live music most nights. The owner was helpful, highlighting places to go on a map. The apartment had everything we needed including a hot plate, comfortable bed and powerful shower.
Liked the atmosphere, friendly staff and the meals were fantastic, great beverage selection. Awesome place to unwind and relax when traveling around the South Island whether inside or outside by the fire which was my favorite place to have a drink or two Okay it was several 😀 but besides that it has become a favorite place of ours to stay and it was only for a night will definitely return thank you Cardrona Hotel.
Fox Glacier
The Lodge is very quaint and set in a quiet lane. Very good rooms with a wooden theme decord. The Breakfast was very nice. The Owners were very helpful. We were 3 cyclists from India riding across South Island. Due to some bike problems, We were late in our riding schedule. So on our request, The hotel even refunded a prepaid room stay as we had to check out 1 day earlier. Highly recommended. Rgds.
Picton
Picton is very nice, a ferry port between the New Zealand North and South islands. The gateway to the South Island. It was a panic booking due to other factors but by chance the apartment was free. Really would have liked to stay and have use of it for longer but life makes it's own design, it's own route like driving on a motorway without turnoffs!
Stylish chic hotel overlooking lake. Fabulous views. Loved the special touches in the rooms. Would stay again. Pay for the parking garage because street parking is limited. Fanciest hotel we visited in South Island. We had a good dinner at Finz. Be sure to visit the harbor area and the botanical gardens. Odd Saint was excellent for breakfast.
Fantastic place. Amazing kitchen.dining lounge area. So impressed that we highly recommend staying here. We look forward to coming back one day and we recommend it to our family and friends. A big thank you to your friendly staff. One of the nicest places we have stayed in the south island of New Zealand. Thanks kindly.
Picton
Apartment with the most amazing views over the marina. Exceptionally well kitted out with everything you could need for eating in. Lots of glass to take advantage of the views. Fabulous place to start the South Island phase of our travels. A bonus when we got off the ferry to find we were 100m from our accommodation
Wanaka
While traveling through New Zealand’s South Island, this accommodation in Wanaka is a must-visit. The facilities are exceptionally clean, and its close proximity to shopping centers and restaurants makes it incredibly convenient. Plus, the staff were wonderfully friendly, which added to the great experience.
Kaikoura
Where to start! We loved this property, the best we’ve stayed in on our 3 month trip around both the north and south islands of New Zealand. We loved the space, the views, the access to the town and all the activities it has to offer. We would definely recommend this place for couples, friends, or families.
Perfect place to stay immediately on arrival from the Wellington to Picton ferry so I could catch my breath and plan my South Island adventures. Room was very comfortable and quite spacious. A very short walk to the Oxley Hotel for a lovely evening meal and to the Seabreeze Cafe for an amazing breakfast.
Greymouth
Out of 14 accommodations on our holiday in North and South islands of New Zealand, this was probably the best we stayed in. The host was magnificent and the quality (and quantity) of the inclusive breakfast as we stayed in the lodge was exceptional. The room was big, well equipped and comfortable.
Cromwell
It was such a happy time to have a kind host, dogs who like people, and people who love this space together. Accommodation was kept clean every day and was the best accommodation I personally experienced on the South Island. If I come to New Zealand next time, I will definitely visit again.
Views to die for. Great sized apartment. One of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. The sap on the private deck was fantastic! The associated pub had great food and great service. A definite highlight of our trip around the South Island so far.
Arrowtown
The town of Arrowtown New Zealand is a must on anyone's holiday list in the South Island. The Arrowfield apartments are the perfect place to stay. Lovely self contained comfortable accommodation with all modern cons. Perfectly located and quiet.
This was my second stay in four days and it somehow raised the bar even from my first perfect stay. If I ever come back to New Zealand’s South Island, this will be my first choice of a place to stay in Christchurch.
We really enjoyed the restaurant ant the hot tub. We stayed 2 nights, 1 at the beginning of our south island journey and 1 at the end. It was great to know our last night would be spent in an amazing hotel.
Haast
Very beautiful spot on West coast of South Island. Beaches were deserted and fantastic. Nightime skies a treat with star gazing. Hotel owner was gracious and helpful. Room was good, quiet, clean.
