A main town in North Iceland with a cute downtown area. There are bunch of nice shops and restaurants ranging in different prices. Akureyri is a very safe city, many people are still out and walking around town at 11 p.m. or later.
Good stop on the way to North Iceland. Staying longer might be a bit boring.
Akureyri is a beautiful town in Northern Iceland located on a long fjord. The town is very walk-able with a beautiful botanical gardens and a wonderful community pool. The main street in the center of town is very popular during all hours of the day... that said, I recommend staying at any of the many guesthouses away from the main block in town to avoid putting up with street noise. Some public transportation exists to other towns in the region. This is our favorite town in Iceland to use as a base for further explorations into North Iceland.
Akureyri is a good spot to use for driving to other parts of North Iceland. Centrally located, decent grocery store for stocking up for the day's jaunt, good restaurants, fairly low key. Well worth the drive from Reykjavik. We were able to go see Lake Myvatn, Dettifoss/Selfoss, several of the geothermal areas in one longish day. If we hadn't slept in we probably could have gotten the whole peninsula with Husavik in as well. Also did several short hikes in the area that day as well- the geothermal areas have a lot of options for good walks.
Akureyri is quaint and easy to get around. Botanical gardens beautiful. We ate at Akureyri Fish and had ice cream at a famous ice cream store near Nonni museum. Driving from Reykjavik was very long. Recommend flying then renting a car. North Iceland is beautiful and green with stunning waterfalls, craters, Nature Baths overlooking Lake Myvetin.
a well run, truly lovely boutique hotel in a small village in North Iceland that was once a major herring fishing and canning center. There is an elegant restaurant in the hotel, as well as a beautiful bar, a nice big hot tub area, and inviting lounge. the room was simple and small but extremely comfortable with beautiful linens, pillows, and great shower. we were very happy to spend 4 nights here.
Varmahlid
Very comfortable, very clean and well-appointed rooms. There is a spacious and well-supplied kitchen for guests to use. Location is great for access to outdoor activities in this part of north Iceland, and the Glaumbaer homestead/museum is just a few hundred meters down the road. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Everything exceeded my expectations. Highly recommend.
This was a very nice place to stay for two nights during a trip to north Iceland. Food was good, lovely sitting room/dining area with great views. We sat in the lounge and played game after dinner - very comfortable. Nicely decorated and nicely maintained. We did not make use of the swimming pool next door but it looked nice.

We had a fantastic stay at the guesthouse Stóru-Laugar. Everything was exactly as expected – clean, cozy, and inviting. The host was incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. I would highly recommend this guesthouse to anyone looking for a comfortable and pleasant stay in North Iceland.

Excellent accommodation, comfy beds. Proximity to Godafoss, Aldeyjarfoss, Myvatn, Hverir, and craters, not too far from Dettifoss and Selfoss, which makes it a perfect place to stay for couple of nights in North Iceland. Bonus point: free laundry facilities, but washer and dryer both take too long to finish.
Good location for seeing north Iceland sites. Appealing interior design and furnishings without being ostentatious; really appreciated the connections to local Iceland people and culture. Restaurant food was excellent. Outdoor hot tubs were much appreciated, especially after hiking in the wind & snow.
Húsavík
The house is on a nice location, on the one hand in the middle of nowhere, on the other hand not far from the attractions of the north Iceland. It is very well equipped with practically everything one would want for a relaxing stay. Staying in the hot tub outside and observing the stars was fantastic.
Real pretty location when visiting North Iceland. Love the individual rooms and view is amazing. Hotel dinner was so good and free breakfast was amazing!! We didn’t get northern lights but boy if there was one this place couldn’t have been better. Love the heated bathroom too.

Very well located and easy to find. Self check-in and -out were super easy. The space was very clean, comfortable and spacious, even if the kitchen did get a bit busy at breakfast and dinner times. Definitely recommend for a trip to North Iceland.

Comfortable cottage and having everything you need. Cosy, clean and warm, it has great views from the windows. It was very good for us on our way from the North Iceland towards South.
