J-Hoppers Kumano Yunomine Guesthouse is situated in Hongu, a 10-minute drive away or a 70-minute walk on the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Route from Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine. Exceptional Guesthouse. I must thank the Manager (did not get his name) for refunding me for a night's stay as there was a change in plans. He was very, very kind. I loved the in-house onsen.

Set in Tanabe and only 200 metres from Kumanokodo Nakahechi Museum of Art, 民宿 和合 Minshuku WAGO offers accommodation with mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking. Very convenient stop along the Kumano-Kodo route. We brought our own food for dinner and the host set up a nice table outside for us. Everything was very clean and the host is really nice.

Situated just 500 metres from Shingu Castle Ruins Park, AJITO Hostel & CafeBar provides accommodation in Shingu with access to free bikes, a bar, as well as full-day security. Very clean and modern, excellent quality amenities were provided. Everything was done with a lot of thought and care. I felt so relaxed to arrive after a long travel day to a place so comfortable. Loved the pajamas too. The owner is also very friendly and accommodating - we went to his restaurant for dinner and the food was amazing and everyone was sooo welcoming

Situated in Wakayama with Kasai Park nearby, Surf Imin G-Sun features accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking, as well as access to a sauna. The owner has a good energy and very respectful I guess to all kind of guest either you like to stay quiet or being friendly. I could see his good care for the comfort in every corner. I enjoyed his expression and I respect his transparency. Cool owner. Thank you for all kindness and openness.

Set just 1.4 km from Shirarahama Beach, ゲストハウス三軒家 features accommodation in Shirahama with access to a garden, a shared lounge, as well as a shared kitchen. Lovely little guesthouse with three rooms. Very cosy shared living area. You sleep on tatamis (comfortable!) and bathroom facilities are shared. We arrived by car and there was parking. Our host gave us some excellent recommendations around town. It’s in a residential neighbourhood about a 10 minute walk down to the beach and the tourist area, which is really nice (as the centre of town feels a bit touristy)

Set in Shingu in the Wakayama region, with Kamikura Shrine and Shingu Castle Ruins Park nearby, くまの蔵inn Warehouse offers accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. The host Koji drove us to our Kumano River tour the next day which was a 20 minute drive and he did it very generously for us. He was very flexible with our check-in time and was extremely gracious and friendly and helpful and made sure we were very comfortable and then left us alone. The apartment was great for four people and it was quirky and spotless and charming. I would definitely stay again.

Featuring 2-star accommodation, Guest House Suzumeno Kakurembo is set in Koyasan, 37 km from Kishi Station and 44 km from Matsushita Park. Very genuinely kind staff. The room is very comfortable with complete amenities. The adjoining restaurant/cafe also provided delicious food for dinner and breakfast. Totally recommended for people who want to enjoy Koyasan but wanting to save on accommodation by not staying in the temples.

Offering quiet street views, Guest House hachi hachi is an accommodation situated in Koyasan, 37 km from Kishi Station and 43 km from Matsushita Park. So clean !!!! The owner was so helpful

Set in Shimosato and only 4.8 km from Taiji Municipal Stone Wall Memorial Hall, 宿坊 大泰寺 Temple Hotel Daitai-ji offers accommodation with mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking. Beautiful temple interiors and gardens, relaxing time by the river, very friendly staff and most of all, the experiences that you can book when staying there: zen meditation, meal appreciation, and copying of sutras, all with the chief monk himself who had a lot of patience to answer all our questions.

Featuring 2-star accommodation, Guesthouse Yui is situated in Hongu, 8.5 km from Hosshinmon Oji Shrine and 23 km from Kumanokodo Nakahechi Museum of Art. I was so fortunate to choose Guesthouse Yui to spend over a week doing Kumano Kodo and stay for Christmas. I used it as a base to walk the Nakahechi route, catching the bus to/from the trail each day, as required. Staying at Guesthouse Yui made all this much easier and more enjoyable. The owner-operator Sanae-san is such a welcoming and caring host. She made my stay like a home-away-from-home. I had the tatami room nearest the entrance which was spacious, clean and warm. I made use of the common area for writing, emailing, watching TV. I was fortunate to be there during a slower time which made it not so busy, apparently. Regardless, Sanae-san put on a hot pot for 4 of us guests one night which was superb. The shower/bath facilities at the guesthouse are very good but I didn't use these much as there is an excellent community public bath a 5 minute walk away (and only 200 yen!). Mad if you don't use it. Kumano Hongo Taisha bus stop and the "town centre" is a 5 minute walk away. Here the dining options are good but very few. Sanae provides full use of the kitchen with stove, rice cooker, microwave etc if you want to cook. She also provides basic items such as beer, packet rice etc to purchase. I highly recommend Iwatani-san's Ramen restaurant on Monday and Tuesday nights, and Miyazushi the other nights.
