Attractively set in the Toyako Onsen district of Lake Toya, Toyako Guest House Ponkotan is situated 300 metres from Lake Toya, 40 km from Muroran and 40 km from Higashi-muroran Station. The staff is so kind and welcoming. I really felt at home during my short stay here. The sleeping area was simple but comfortable and has everything you need.

Situated 1.4 km from Otaru Station, The Otaornai Backpacker's Hostel Morinoki offers 1-star accommodation in Otaru and has a garden, a shared lounge and a terrace. I booked at this hostel based on someone's recommendation from another hostel. I have spent nearly a year in Japan and this is one of my favourite hostels I have stayed in! I met up with my friend in Otaru and we both stayed in the female-only dorm. The location is great, and we were lucky to see some fireworks from the veranda outside. The entire environment is very cosy, there is a whole wall full of DVDs that are free to watch, so we watched a Ghibli film nearly every night we stayed. There's also a huge selection of books, manga and games too, with lots of cosy spaces to enjoy. The host and staff members were very helpful, friendly and kind. And of course they have a dog and cat so that is the cherry on top!

Located in Kutchan, 9.3 km from Hirafu Station, Niseko Tabi-tsumugi Backpackers provides accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a shared lounge and barbecue facilities. I loved everything about the place! Nice location, as it's close to the train station, a convenience store, and a supermarket. There's also a small (and very affordable) ski resort nearby that is perfect for beginner skiers/snowboarders who want to do some practice runs before trying the pricier resorts in Niseko. The place was kept clean by the host (Ryo-san), who was simply great. He made the atmosphere so relaxed and welcoming for everyone that it didn't feel like I was among strangers. Wouldn't hesitate to book this place again if I'm ever back in the area.

Located in Furano, within 2.8 km of Furano Station and 3.8 km of Windy Garden, 雪玉Snowball Hostel provides accommodation with a shared lounge and free WiFi throughout the property as well as free... Really good location, lovely helpful host. Fantastic price, would definitely stay here again.

Set in Hakodate and with Hakodate Goryokaku reachable within 3.2 km, Tasogare Hostel offers a shared lounge, non-smoking rooms, free WiFi throughout the property and a bar. Great location, super close to the bus stop and the Hakodate arena. Was a little sceptical because there were no reviews and the location doesn’t show up on Google maps but for the price it was amazing and accommodating. The beds were comfy but unfortunately there was no one else in the entire building when I was there so it did feel a little creepy lol

Boasting ski-to-door access, Niseko Hirafu Tsukushi is situated in Kutchan in the Hokkaido region, 5.6 km from Hirafu Station and 1.1 km from Lerch Memorial Park. Staff (Kana-san and Suke-san) were amazing. Clean and comfortable, could be some noise due to the nature of the dorm room. Shuttle bus pick up (8 and 9am) was great. Convenient buses to supermarket or into town. Well stocked kitchen if you intend on cooking.
