Small hostel with the family living on premise. They were very kind and accommodating. Everything was kept very clean. Excellent wifi. A good portion of San Jose is a little dangerous these days but this neighhborhood felt quite safe. It has quite a few restaurants (and a good gym) within walking distance but lacks a nearby laundry service and not offered by the hostel. Something to ponder if you plan on staying longer. Bed was comfortable.

Casa Pandora Hostel Women Only is situated in San José, within 7.5 km of Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica and 10 km of Parque Diversiones. The location is perfect, close to Barrio Escalante and very close to the city center by walking as well. There is a supermarket where you can find everything you need at 5 minutes walking distance and very nice restaurants and coffee shops around (I recommend Mandrágora Gastro Pub with Harry Potter vibes and Franco for a nice coffee). You have everything in this hostel, a lot of showers, toilets, full equipped kitchen, beds are perfects. The team who is in charge of this hostel is very helpful and friendly ! Thanks to them ! It's automatic check in, so nobody will be here to host you so make sure to have read before the message from the hostel on booking. You will have to fill some basics info in order to have your key to enter the building (1 minute action so it's manageable easily)

I had a wonderful stay at Casa Escalante during my time in San José. The hotel is perfectly located, just a short walk from one of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods. It's close enough to enjoy the energy but far enough to avoid the hassle. My room was spacious, clean, and well-equipped with everything I needed for a comfortable stay. I especially appreciated the peace and quiet. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. They were able to assist me with anything I needed, including extending my stay on short notice. Although I wasn’t feeling well and unfortunately missed the breakfast, I truly appreciated the thoughtful service. The highlight of my stay was the room itself, which had a very comfortable bed and a spacious bathroom. Casa Escalante offers great value for money. I felt right at home and will certainly return the next time I'm in San José!

As my 1st accommodation in Costa Rica they set the standard so high it went unmatched for the 3 weeks I stayed in the country. Although not modern, it features sizable dorms, comfortable beds, has no lockers but clothes hangers are available and valuables may be stored in a specialised room. Pretty good breakfast, decent shared kitchen with an impressive spice rack, stable wi-fi. All that, however, is just facilities. What truly makes the property stand apart are the staff and especially its manager, with his insights into local culture, support, and warmth. The fact that the building also houses a local NGO makes the place even more dynamic and provides opportunities for some interesting conversations.

Located 6 km from La Sabana Metropolitan Park, In the Wind Hostel and Guesthouse offers 3-star accommodation in San José and features a garden, a shared lounge and a terrace. I spent a week at this hostel and really enjoyed my stay. The staff was very personable and helpful. Per other's comments about the house being older, it is true but everything worked well and the wifi was excellent. Adored the coffee! The hostel was cleaned daily and throughout the day. Excellent resources available on buses, attractions, tours etc. Neighborhood was safe and near the university so a good variety of restaurants nearby.
