"Sigiriya is truly one of the most remarkable and awe-inspiring places to visit in Sri Lanka! This ancient rock fortress, often called the 'Eighth Wonder of the World,' combines breathtaking natural beauty with fascinating history and incredible engineering. Climbing up the massive rock can be challenging but so rewarding, as each step brings you closer to astonishing views and ancient frescoes that are beautifully preserved. The panoramic view from the top is worth every step, offering a stunning outlook over the lush green jungle and nearby mountains. The surrounding gardens, water pools, and ruins at the base also showcase the advanced landscape design of the ancient kingdom. Sigiriya is a must-visit for anyone who loves history, culture, and nature. It’s an experience that leaves you with a deep appreciation for Sri Lanka's rich heritage!"
Lovely village to stay in for a few days to visit the sigiriya rock. Really enjoyed our stay here. Very peaceful with friendly locals. Favourite places were to walk around the rock. Good selection of restaurants and a really nice.vibe
It was my first visit to Sigiriya, and despite learning about its rich history in school, seeing the majestic ancient city and its outstanding architecture in person was truly awe-inspiring. Every moment of the journey was mesmerizing, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
It is a must to visit Sigiriya when visiting Sri Lanka. There is a lot of history in the place and the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Sigiriya Rock, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura were definitely worth visiting. The view from the top of Sigiriya Rock was breathtaking although the hike of over 1000 steps was really tiring especially in the humid weather.
Sigiriya is a lovely village with two spectacular rocks to climb, some lovely restaurants and a couple of shops. Was very disappointed that there was one poor elephant still in this day and age being used to give lazy tourists trips up and down the high street, seemed particularly cruel as they are allowed to roam free in the area and national park. This should be stopped and the animals rights considered! As was the case all round Sri Lanka there were no bins anywhere for rubbish and as a result the streets and areas of interest were littered.
The rocks are challenging and you have to have good fitness and balance to climb particularly the temple rock. No steps at the top of the climb, a bit treacherous but worth the view if you manage. The monkeys were very amused with our efforts going up or down. :)
