Great place for a day trip, or two. Limited eating options (compared to Reykjavik). The lagoons (Forest lagoon / Myvatn) are worth a visit. There are of course also some nearby waterfalls. There's a fantastic petting zoo which is definitely not to be missed.
Nice place to stay while visiting sites in North Iceland. We were able to see the Northern lights while there in early October, but our lodging was slightly out of the main city lights. Nice restaurants and easy to walk around. Botanical garden was a very nice place.
We did not realize Akureyri is so beautiful until we reached there. So beautiful in and around Akureyri. We should have spent more days there than Reykjavik. It is very beautiful by nature. The one thing which I didn’t like about is parking which costs money and officers were roaming around to charge you. Max parking was there for 2 hours in the city unless you install app and recharge every now and then. I couldn’t not find an option to charge more than 2 hours in the meter. I don’t want to install app on my phone for just parking in other countries. I would recommend the officials to remove the parades for tourists or should provide more options to parking to stay longer in the downtown. We were rushing to the parking lot not get tickets or fine. You have plenty of lands not to charge on parking instead you can charge on other things . Forest Lagoon is another pool you can enjoy the hot water
we discovered some amazing places here, like one beautiful cafe and vintage bookshop and especially a second hand where we bought perfect pieces. they have plenty of vegan options. we really liked traffic lights, and overall they are very lgbt1 friendly here.
We loved the artistic area with the multicolored tiled street and the HOF, also the heart traffic lights and the geothermal pools and the fresh rolls at bakeries The aurora was outstanding! WE hope to return
It was very interesting to visit "Iceland's Capital of the North" after having spent ten days in Reykjavik earlier this year. Akureyri is a lot quieter than Iceland's capital and is perfect to visit during the Autumn or Winter with the "magical" snowy scenery and with an excellent chance of seeing the Northern Lights, but a visit there in the Summer is also highly recommended to visit the amazing Botanical Gardens and lush green grass, flowers and trees.
