In picturesque Woodstock, just 20 minutes’ drive from Oxford centre, Macdonald Bear Hotel offers a restaurant. Set in a 13th-century inn, the rooms have period features. Historic as well as perfect location for me
Woodstock is a beautiful market town lots of nice shops and restaurants. The Punch Bowl do lovely meals (Moo pie was very nice and deserts yummy) and very dog friendly all on the doorstep of the amazing Blenhelm Palace.
The purpose of our stay was to visit Oxford University abd the town itself. Everywhere is within close proximity travelling by car. Lovely quiet area, lots of major road works going on at the moment.
If you are wanting to stay in a village close to, but not actually in Oxford, then consider Cassington. Though small, Cassington has the rural village outlook but is just a few miles away from Oxford. The Park & Ride is 4 miles away; also the train station at Oxford Parkway for day getaways to London by rail. There are two pubs in Cassington - the Red Lion and Chequers. The 20 mph speed limit in the village make it safe for strolling and dog walking. A great base for access to Blenheim Palace and many Oxfordshire walks.
CHarming and quaint village near Tackley, the village I grew up in. The walk to Tackley past the canal and river is lovely and barely changed in 50 years. The village pub "The Oxford Arms" does a couple of decent real ales and nice food.
Woodstock is a beautiful town with creatively stocked gift and antique shops and good coffee shops and restaurants. The atmosphere generally is warm and friendly. Plenty to see and do with access to the beautiful grounds of Blenheim Place and exhibitions and museums within the town. Excellent bus service to Oxford and neighbouring towns and villages.
Not a picturesque place but good if you don’t want to pay Oxford city prices. Easy access into city, by taxi (20 mins& approx £15 for 3 people), parkway & bus. Reasonable selection supermarkets & restaurants.
