Anchorage is a great destination and jumping off point for amazing Alaska adventures!
Anchorage/Alaska is a great place to visit, but you need a car in order to get out of town and really see what it offers. If you stay just in the city you will miss the most INCREDIBLE sites. You have to travel a bit. You should plan to come in middle of June to end of July to miss some of the rain.
We can’t say enough on what a wonderful experience the Natural History bus tour into the park was to take. We saw all of Mt. Denali (no clouds obstructing the view), moose, a grizzly bear, caribou, hares and Alaskan ground squirrels. The scenery was spectacular. The free dog sledding demonstration was really fun as well.
If you book a park trip that gets back after 6pm beware!!! The bus company dropped us at the bus depot at 10pm. The shuttle stops running at 6pm. We asked the driver for a lift, he said no. We had to stand around, outside, in the woods in Alaska, for one hour until our hotel finally picked us up. Make sure the bus takes you back to your hotel or to a shuttle stop that still has busses running!!!!
Like nowhere else on earth, unique area of nature and history. Very scenic and great base for nature tours. The real Alaska. Historic Hotel Seward a must.
Homer is an amazing location to take in the immense beauty of Alaska. As spring begins, it would be best to plan excursions before arriving there. There is a water taxi to Halibut Cove which operates with a restaurant in Halibut Cove. We were unable to go as the reservations were full for the day we had available. In addition, popular restaurants also can be unavailable without reservations made in advance.
Anchorage is a great place to start boat or train or other explorations of Alaska. Cruise terminal short bus ride (Whittier) and trains and buses to Denali. Lots of boat tours in Whittier too. Great hikes not far put of town also.
Healy Alaska is a small town about 10 miles north of Denali National Park. It is a small year round town with many seasonal residents. There are several small restaurants. 49th State Brewery is fun and excellent. Redbeards’ Barbecue and gas station- good food and great folks!
My 5th time staying in Seward. I love this place! Great food, happy people and fun adventures. Alaska “Point of View” is my favorite place to stay. Ray’s is the best restaurant. Kenai Fjords Tours has the best day cruises.
Lots of restaurants and shopping compared to home in Fairbanks. Visited the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center just south of Girdwood. Excellent for all ages. Alaska Wild Scoops has great ice cream.
Anchorage
I broke my arm while we were in Alaska so we spent a bit more time in the apartment than we originally planned. So it is with extra appreciation that I can say the apartment was clean, warm and comfortable, and had everything we needed, almost like being at home. Anchorage is quite small so everything seemed pretty close. Oh, small note to owners with respect to arrival instructions - it isn’t immediately clear which is the “front” & which is the “back” of the property. It would be good if a plan showing the unit entrance could be provided.
Sterling
It was nice and smaller. The people who cared for the property ran a tight ship. Some people came at one point and were causing problems with noise and were dealt with. I don’t know if they were guests or people who just stopped there. But it was dealt with quickly. The rooms were basic, but nice and clean. It seemed like a work in progress. It it is going in the right direction. Hotels and accommodations in Alaska are different than other places. So you can’t hold them to the same standard as in Europe or the lower 48 and parts of Canada.
We discovered the Aspen Suites Hotel as we were winding down our trip in Alaska. It is close to everything in Anchorage. Clean, comfortable and affordable. We did not use the kitchen but it had everything you need to store and prepare food. There was a comfortable seating area and queen size bed in our suite. The bathroom was roomy and had ample towels and products for the shower. Pillows and linens were very nice and the mattress was a comfy one! The ladies at the front desk were warm and welcoming when we checked in.
Anchorage
Scott was very thorough in his communication and the location is great not far from any of the highways, the complex is family friendly and in a safe neighborhood. We loved the decor it set a perfect ambiance for being in Alaska. I would definitely recommend this property over a cramped hotel room and would stay here again if I am ever visiting this beautiful country again. Thankyou Scott for recommending Simon and Seaforts Saloon and grill, the waterfront view and the food was out of this world :)
Talkeetna
LOVED this lodge. I stayed at 7 locations across Alaska, this was the best by far. Perfect location, homely common area with books and a TV etc, SUPER comfortable beds, cabins felt so cosy, fun Alaskan themed decor made it feel like a home and not just a hotel; the staff went out of their way to allow us to check in very late by leaving a friendly personalised note. You can wander down to the banks of the Susitna River to the most spectacular Denali view. Cannot recommend this Lodge enough!
The breakfast was phenomenal!! The staff were beautiful people inside and out, they really made my family's trip to Alaska a trip to remember! They were exceptionally helpful and kind. They went up and beyond to help with any and everything from providing rides to downtown or the airport, to making sure my older parents were fed when we arrived very late from the airport. Their kindness and service was intentional and truly a blessing. Awesome hotel! I highly recommend!!!
Anchorage
Was really happy with the size of the room, the cleanliness, the amenities provided, the location, the check-in process was quick and simple and the lady that managed it was extremely friendly! Would not hesitate to stay here again. Location couldn't have been more perfect, just short walk away from the train and everything else in the city. There was even a kettle provided, which was not the standard in most of the accommodations/hotels I stayed in, in Alaska.
Glennallen
It was the best place in Alaska we had a pleasure to sleep in. Very nice hotel, with the authentic soul, located in a picturesque lake shoreline. They are providing very tasty, complimentary breakfasts, you can also order other meals and drinks later. I promise you that a pint of beer on a very green grass in front of the lodge will taste like nowhere else. You can rent a free canoe and explore neighboring islands, water in the lake was warm so we enjoyed swimming too.
The Historic Anchorage Hotel was part of our adventure to explore our 49th state, Alaska. The hotel is conveniently located in downtown Anchorage and everything is within easy walking distance (including the train station). The breakfast was wonderful, the staff VERY accommodating! On the day we were leaving, we had to be up and out at 5am. The staff had positioned a luggage cart just outside our door. We've never had a hotel do that for us before.
Anchorage
It's clear that the owner is working on many upgrades to the property. The living room and bedrooms were very comfy. I slept great! There was ample space and lots of towels. Because it's Alaska, there is no air conditioning, and since it was a warm weekend, having multiple large fans was a plus. The location is convenient to many stores and restaurants if you have a car. This was a far cheaper option than getting a hotel suite in the summer.
During our stay in Alaska we stumbled on the charming city of Palmer as we headed North to Denali National Park. We stayed one night at the Eagle Hotel and liked it so much, we decided to stay another night on our return trip to Anchorage. It is conveniently located about 30 minutes outside of Anchorage. The hotel and room are extremely clean and although we didn't use it, has a very nice laundry room.
Anchorage
Sunstar Alaska is a wonderful small business run by an amazing host who puts her passion, craft and work ethic into every aspect of her work. A good business takes care of a guest. A good hotel provides quality and comfort for their guest. Doing both makes a great business. The level to which the owner/operator cares for her guests and provides comfort, care and quality for her guests is simply the best.
Fairbanks
Great old style lodge accommodation right on the Chena River.it's quirky and eccentric in an Alaskan style with stuffed bears and antique artworks. Ideal for seeing northern lights - you even get wake-up calls when they are dancing across the sky. Free breakfast (although basic) is filling and an easy start to the day. Much nicer than the corporate hotels in the town.
Girdwood
Chalet was exactly what we were needed. Close to everything we were needing, it was very well equipped, superbe kitchen, very confortable bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms (that was a nice surprise after few weeks of sharing small hotel rooms and bathroom). If I ever go back to Alaska, I will certainly make sure I can rent this chalet again, it was worth it!
This was our first trip to Alaska as of now we are in our 4th hotel and at everyone, we say comfort inn was our favorite. It was clean and quiet, but the staff (Charlie and Chantel) provided us with exceptional service and went over and above to accommodate our needs. They were courteous and kind, and pleasant and thoughtful. Excellent employees.
Healy
Location was very quiet and serene, not overrun by the cruise ship industry as it is closer to the park. I loved the retro motel feel. Old furnishings but rooms were super clean! Weather your a tourist or Alaska Native needing a place to stay on the long road between Fairbanks and Anchorage, I’d highly recommend Denali Park Hotel!
It was a dignified and grand hotel with a historical background, excellently harmonizing with the pristine environment of Alaska. Having traveled to many places around the world, it was one of the most satisfying hotels I've stayed in. It is considered excellent in many aspects for the price.
Loved the authentic Alaska feel of the hotel. Bed was super comfy and the rooms were neat and well kept. Great shuttle services to the airport and downtown. There were lots of options for breakfast and dinner. Great range of equipment in the fitness centre.
Nenana
Robin is an excellent host. She attended to our every need. Hotel was in perfect location for our daily activities and within a nearby drive of Denali and restaurants etc. Rooms are cozy but have everything you need, including real Alaskan charm!
Seward
Convenient OKish hotel if you plan on taking the Alaska Railroad. They will pick up you and your luggage from the train station and drop you off at the hotel on arrival and do the same thing the other way on your departure…
