Setting aside the fact that you have to allow for weather extremes in that part of the world, the town of Grange-over-Sands is a delight, but quite an old-fashioned delight. Apart from a steep rising main street it is fairly flat, so a walk along the full length of the promenade is highly to be recommended. Getting round other than in a car is reasonably easy - there is a very reliable train service along the coast - southwards to Carnforth and Lancaster, northwards to Barrow, the Cumbria Coast and Carlisle. There is a regular bus service to Barrow and Kendal (where you can connect with buses to the Lakes) and a town service during the week. There aren't a lot of shops for retail therapy, but the ones they do have are all individual and interesting. They have managed to keep Tesco out - so far!
easy to find, great location on the west coast of Cumbria with easy travelling to the north south or East of the region. great friendly staff and local people, the owners are a great friendly couple. beautiful rooms food drink and atmosphere in the hotel. Cannot wait for the warmer months to go back.
Whitehaven is a good centre for exploring the coast of Cumbria. The archive centre is a great source of material for people who wish to find information on family members who came from this area. The town is compact and easy to explore on foot and the lake district is close by and can be explored by car.
Great base to explore cumbria with enough shopping to keep others interested. If you like night life, there is plenty of that too. More than enough coffee shops to watch the world go by. Public transport is easy and frequent - even up to Gretna!!
Came to Workington for the excellent speedway. Friendly place with lovely friendly helpful people. Recommend the Workington Comets Speedway to anyone, brilliant racing and great value. Workington is a great place to use as a base to visit other places in Cumbria. The Waverley was great for the bar meals which were excellent and brilliant value.
Try going around to the quieter Western side of the Lake for views back toward Keswick with Skidded looming behind - you can get to the lake just beyond Portinscale and on the Cumbrian Way.
The Sun Inn in Bassenthwaite is a very friendly classic British pub serving excellent food in a very relaxed family atmosphere in a beautiful Cumbrian village. Book early to avoid disappointment!
Like us many frequently pass through Kirkby on our way to other places but rarely have stopped overnight. It's great for walking and though in Cumbria on the fringes of the East Lake District, it is also relatively near Sedburgh, Hawes and all the other lovely little towns in North Yorkshire. There are a few basic shops but plenty of nice coffee/tea rooms. A couple of good restaurants too as well as 3 or 4 pubs - so plenty to do in the evening. Obviously busier in the summer months so better to book accommodation/restaurants in advance.
Crowne Inn is in Wetheral, handy for Carlisle. Village is small, with a few sights to make a fairly interesting walk around. If you want to appreciate Cumbria and avoid the busy lake district Wetheral and the Eden Valley is a good choice.
Lovely location and the priory was very interesting. We struggled a bit to find somewhere to eat on the Saturday night. Three pubs in the village all do food but all three had functions on at the same time. We were turned away from two but eventually managed to get something at the third but much later than we would have liked. The walk up towards the lighthouse is well worth it with some stunning views and fresh Cumbrian air!
The location, the staff, the breakfasts and the general feeling of home comforts at this lovely traditional Cumbrian hotel made this a more than perfect trip. I had read some very negative reviews of the hotel rooms and apartments and can only assume that whoever wrote them had unrealistically high expectations. I have worked in the travel industry on almost every continent for more than 40 years in a huge range of properties and I have now added this property to my list of favourites! I also want to thank Howard for all his advice and help.
Elterwater
The location is fab, a really quiet place with a good bus link, on the river. If you're looking for a quick walk, it's just upstream of Skelwith Force on the Cumbrian Way. Elterwater has a big pub and a nice cafe. The Hostel was nice and clean and peaceful. The room was a good size with just 6 beds in it. Showering and cleaning facilities were great. I really liked that if you have the evening meal or breakfast you sit together and this is a great chance to meet and chat with other people.
If you want to stay in a Lakeland pub this is a great example. The location is beautiful. It is close to Ambleside but peaceful. It is next to woods and the river. There are many walks directly from here (leave the car!) of all lengths and grades - eg Fairfield Horseshoe plus one hour each way on a great track over to Ambleside, or you can just amble to Elterwater or as far as you like on the Cumbria Way. The hotel is cosy. The food is good. The staff are friendly. What’s not to love?
Carlisle
Everything was lovely. By arrangement I arrived quite late after a 350 mile drive. I was meet in the car park, (but don't expect this), and given a quick tour of key the points for the morning and then shown to my room. Room was great, breakfast was perfect and the team were all very welcoming. For work, I have traveled widely around the world, but this was on my $ for a very short stop in Cumbria and the quality beats many hotels that I have stayed in. Thank you.
Penrith
Liked everything about a local pub, we live in Cumbria and we were on a cycling tour. Great welcome when we arrived, we were able to check in straight away. Room was better than we expected, for pub standards it was above & beyond some hotels we’ve stayed in! It was great to read the history of pub given its run by local community members (400 - 500 members) Well Done. We will be back.
Lovely hotel, booked for one night to visit the Cumbria Classic Car Show at Dalemain, which was a five minute drive away. The room was very clean and comfortable. There was plenty of teabags, coffee etc, plus hot chocolate and biscuits, and a teapot! The breakfast was wonderful, freshly cooked and very enjoyable. Parking was off-road and it felt very safe as a solo traveller.
The views over Morecambe Bay were excellent from our bedroom, and restaurant. The bedroom was very comfortable. This is a beautiful old hotel, with dark wood panelling. The lounge and Library provided us with somewhere to sit and read. It has extensive gardens to the front, and plenty of parking. A perfect location for South Lakes, and South Cumbrian Coast.
Ambleside
Lovely old property - history of being a prior hotel in the last century. Convenient for access to Ambleside - 15 minute paved walk. Lovely quiet setting with views and beautiful gardens and parking outside property. Big airy room. Lovely breakfast - lots of choice - including fresh fruit, cereal, full Cumbrian cooked breakfast, kippers and eggs Benedict.
Workington
Hotel is small but charming with lovely friendly staff. It is in an excellent location for the town centre and also a good base for visiting and exploring Cumbria. Our room was spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated with finishing touches. Great shower in en-suite. Food was good.
Lovely room decor, comfy bed and decent sized ensuite. Fabulous breakfast, highly recommend the full cumbrian and the Guinness rarebit. Evening meal was also excellent. Hotel is in a central location and free parking was a bonus. Would definitely return.
staff v kindly allowed us to bring e-bikes inside to charge up and store safe overnight. That was really appreciated. Hotel is brilliantly located for cyclists doing the Morecambe Bay ride and in our case continuing up the Cumbrian coast.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was lovely and very spacious, with some wonderful Cumbrian themed tea and coffee mugs which was a bonus. Breakfast and evening meal both good. Pool was a nice amenity as well.
It is an historic hotel which is popular with the local farming community. I enjoy being their to hear the chat and Cumbrian accents. The hotel is in the centre of Penrith and not too far from the station.
Cumbria Park Hotel is the ideal place to stay and visit Carlisle as you can get to the town centre in a few minutes. The staff are all very helpful and pleasant. The breakfast was excellent.
Cumbrian Breakfast was outstanding. Staff were lovely. Room was really comfy. Beautiful walk down to Bassenthwaite Lake from hotel. Great all round experience. Highly recommended.
Whitehaven
Ideally situated for exploring the lakes and Cumbria coast Apartment is in good central location within easy reach of Harbour, shops, restaurants and pubs
Torver
The location is perfect for the first night stop whilst walking the Cumbria Way (Torver detour). Hotel/Pub serves a good range of ales.
Young bar girl working was lovely, unsure how she does it. Location is great if starting the Cumbria Way.
Breakfast was really good! Made to order and proper Cumbrian produce.
Very comfortable and great spa facilities
