Alicante, the capital of the Alicante Province of Valencia is a fabulous place to visit, with its blend of historic and modern elements. The view from the Santa Barbara castle is amazing and it can be accessed by road, elevator or by walking up through the adjacent park. There are plenty of good restaurants, including a curry house. The most exciting thing is probably the fiesta "Hogueras de San Juan", which takes place each year between 19th and 24th June, followed by a series of firework displays on the beach. The local beach Playa Postiguet is great considering it's in the city, but do take care with broken glass in the sand, especially at weekends when the local youngsters celebrate a 'botellón' on the beach at night. Another piece of trivia you won't find in the tourist guides, is that Alicante is rather like Brighton in the UK in that it is very accepting towards the LGBT community.
