We stayed in a lot of great places during our trip to Japan, but this was my favorite. The house was beautiful and atmospheric, like something out of a dream. The host was friendly and helpful. We met him at his restaurant down the block and he showed us to the property and recommended a nearby hot spring. The house is located in the Hongu area, a ten or fifteen minute walk from the bus stop that will take you to the shrines and Kumano Kodo.
Villa KUMANO is located in Hongu, just 5.2 miles from Hosshinmon Oji Shrine and 14 miles from Kumanokodo Nakahechi Museum of Art.

This is such a unique property that it begs a narrative and not just numerical ratings. First of all, the location is key because the hike from our previous location was so far. It was much more pleasant to break it up and arrive at Kumano Hongu Taisha early, have lunch, and arrive at Yumomine hot springs early before everyone else showed up. I'm not sure how everyone else is doing their mapping, but the trail goes north near this place before dropping south to Hongu Taisha. The place is located in a small village, and the property seems to have been a business next to the river. It's super quiet and the view of the river and mountain behind it is lovely. It's a super safe small town and the door is left open. The host is lovely, and speaks pretty good English. He stopped by in the evening to check in with us. The place is quiet and clean, has beautiful views, but sparsely decorated. My GF says "it needs a woman's touch" ;).
There's a grocery store nearby, though the meals provided by the host were outstanding. Breakfast and lunch gets delivered between 6 and 7 AM.

Extremely clean and organized. We only stayed for one night so we didn’t make use of all of its facilities, but it has ever you need, even for cooking. The host was very helpful.

Ugh! What a lovely experience! Quiet, unique, and the host is kind, caring, and the food was delicious! And the driver to the trail was a huge help! Totally different than a hotel and a great experience!

The house is located right along the Kumano Kodo trail! It is wonderful to walk into a well-designed, comfortable home after a long day of hiking. The house has multiple bedrooms, each with its own sink and toilet! The living room and kitchen are very well-equipped, and the barbeque stove outside is very easy to use. My friends and I had the best stay and great rest.
Perfect for families, groups, or couples who enjoy luxury and independence while traveling. Enjoy the space and privacy of these fully-furnished, free-standing mansions – travelers can cook, lounge, and explore at their own pace. Note that in Bali, a resort will also be called a villa.
The owner truly knows how to provide a warm cosy atmosphere making for a perfect stay. Everything about the villa was unbeatable. The view across the rice fields towards the sacred Tori magnificent.
This seems to be a low-budget annex to the hotel next door, with which it shares:
* an amazing outdoor onsen
* a great breakfast
The rooms are not luxurious, but functional and reasonably clean. Overall a good value for the money.
The major onsen resort in Wakayu, which is a really small village. Enjoy the outdoor onsen and peaceful river view a lot. The breakfast buffet is very Japanese-style and nice. Staff are very helpful. The free shuttle bus is great.
Our host Manabu is very hospitable, and ensures everything is going well for your visit. We enjoyed the location, 10 .minutes walk to fabulous onsen, quiet rural village. There is a small minimalist for groceries, Okagesan yakitoria run by Manabu san, and the cafe at the onsen for meals.
Owner extremely kind and helpful. Room spacious, clean and comfortable, yet harmonizing with the mountain village atmosphere. View from my room directly to the garden.
Excellent Japanese stile hostel in a very picturesque village, with very modern and really big beds and bedrooms, and very clean. Great common areas. Big kitchen with all the facilities. Outstanding onsen. Excellent staff always ready to help. Highly recommended.
Located a short stroll to Yunomine village and staff were very helpful, onsite Onsen very hot and real, sulphur smell and all, definitely straight out of the earth.
The private onsen's were really nice and so was the traditional japanese room - pretty, clean and warm, which was great after hiking. The staff was friendly and helpful, they made sure, that we were aware that the food options in village were limited, so we could make an informed decision about ordering dinner from them.
Very low light pollution at night, we were able to see the Milky Way from the terrace, which was accessible from our room. It was great! The location is perfect if you want to hike the 1-day loop of the Kumano Kodo and also drive down to the Kumano Nachi Taisha. They have some snacks and instant noodles in the kitchen in case you miss out on the few restaurants in the village.
Also, the host was very helpful and gave us pointers on which places were open on which day so we did not need to go hungry to bed.
