Rye is a beautiful little town with many small independent shops. The views over the river towards the sea are wonderful. You can see this from the gun garden or the look out point at the beginning of the high street. The church is beautiful and around it is the really old part of Rye. Rye is split into 3 layers. The top where the church and the castle museum is, with all the old style black and white tudor type houses are. 2nd layer is the high street with the small independent shops. 3rd layer is where the road runs around and through Rye. Parking can be a bit difficult but head to the cattle market car park where it'll cost you £1 for ALL day. You can't park there on a Thursday as they have a market. It used to be quite large but has lost many of its traders over the years. In the car park you'll find a place called rope walk. Quite a few nik-nak shops, a cafe and service shops like hairdressers, nail bar that type of thing. It's always interesting sifting through some of the things in there. The mermaid Inn in mermaid Street is worth a look. Many Hollywood stars have stayed there but 8m not sure if they still have the photos on the wall now. Lovely big fire place, good food, a very interesting pub and of course its haunted. We found a new place to eat while we were there, it's a Turkish restaurant where the old post office used to be in cinque ports street. In November they have the bonfire parade, which is a fantastic sight and sound to experience. Unfortunately it's in danger of stopping as it's very expensive to hold. It would be a great pity to loose this age long tradition. The down side of Rye is its very steep slopes to get from one layer to the next. Some of these slops are cobbled so very slippery in the wet. The council installed Parking meters a few years ago which spoil the place.

    Rye itself is lovely.

Rye itself is lovely. The location of property to the town was great . Just too noisy and really we went for what we thought was a secluded garden for our dog ,but was disappointed as it was just a small decking and our dog couldn't manage steps.

A great oldy worldy town with fantastic pubs and restaurants.lovely people and lots of antique and boutique shops on the high street camber and Hastings are near as is rye harbour. Simply Italian is our favourite place to eat and the waterworks micro pub is the best pub on the planet.

Rye is an historic town that needs exploring.

Rye is an historic town that needs exploring. Guide pamphlets are available. There are convenient restaurants and pubs to suit all tastes. Train and bus connections are good. Plenty of parking on non market days. There is a cinema. A short trip to Rye harbour allows exploration at the nature reserve with excellent information centre and cafe. Anyone with walking problems may find some of the cobbled streets challenging

If you want a really authentic Inn the Mermaid is the one for you. Clean rooms and comfy bed. The staff were very helpful and food amazing. The only thing if not good on your feet is the cobbled streets but that is what you expect for this type of setting. Other than that nothing can fault it. Will definitely be back again. Also there is a lovely little cake come sandwich shop tucked down a little side pathway called The Cobbler. If not watching your diet certainly worth a visit.

Rye is a gorgeous town and clean.

Rye is a gorgeous town and clean. One of Henry the VIII's Cinque ports, so lots of history. We visit regularly. Lots of places to eat, recommend Hayden's, Apothecary coffee shop and Cobbles tearoom. There are several others we have not tried. Avoid Marino's fish and Simon the Pieman has gone downhill. Shops- Antique, gifts, books, clothes, chemists, and a good Jempson's supermarket at nearby Peasmarsh. Pleasant town indoor swimming pool. Walks including a short one by the Windmill. Lambs in the fields. Tudor houses, Ypres tower with views. Great play park for children at the bottom of the hill. Paid parking, more near the harbour. Bird watching at the local nature reserve. Recommend staying at the Flackley Ash hotel nearby. Avoid Hastings and St. Leonard's they are ghastly, in need of regeneration. Camber Sands is okay, as is St. Mary's bay, although loos are basic.

Beautiful building with a wealth of history and interesting features. Friendly and helpful staff throughout the hotel and restaurant. Dinner exceptional and a lovely cooked breakfast. Good selection of drinks in the bar and plenty of warm fires for cold winter evenings. We would most certainly return on future visits to Rye and the surrounding area.

The Staff here are lovely - so friendly and helpful... they made us feel very relaxed. The car park at the hotel is a bonus in Rye as not many properties have them, and the hotel is right on the river which is really pretty from the dining room. Bathroom was spotlessly clean. Bed was comfortable.
