Situated along Tanohara River and surrounded by tranquil nature in Kurokawa Onsen hot spring area, Oku no Yu Ryokan offers charming Japanese-style accommodation and various hot spring baths. • Onsen : The best I've tried so far (together with Gero). Has a really nice smell (unlike Beppu lol) and the temperature is perfect. There are also many different separate onsen baths which you can have for yourself for 1 hour if you ask. • Food : Overall great, standard Kaiseki meal (served in a dining room where each room is separated by a small movable wooden wall) • Staff : Very helpful and gave me the option to opt out of my room and go for a smaller one (cheaper) since my friend cancelled last moment and I ended up alone. • Location : As you can imagine, a great natural onsen is often in the countryside, you do have a bus that goes from Aso station (Kumamoto) all the way to Hakata station (Fukuoka) which stops by Kurokawa which is helpful. The ryokan's staff also pick you up at the bus stop if you inform them of your arrival time.

Featuring a spa bath, Shikinosato Hanamura is located in Minamioguni. This ryokan provides free private parking and a 24-hour front desk. Room was very spacious. There were 3 heaters in the room, so definately warm enough to anyone's liking if you needed. Room onsen was nice. Food was in a private dining room for dinner and breakfast. There was a very nice lounge to relax in as well. There is a public cave onsen that was quite special. In winter, roads may have snow and need to be wary if driving in.

Situated in Aso, 42 km from Kumamoto Castle, Syukubo Aso features accommodation with a public bath. The food is excellent, we were there for two days, already the first day the dinner was very nice, but the second day it was superb. The lady owner is extremely nice and helpful. Both the private and the public baths are very nice and relaxing. The bedding was really comfortable, all in all an excellent stay!

Built in 1722, Okyakuya is situated in the historical district of Kurokawa Onsen district. Located only 100 metres from Kurokawa Onsen, Free WiFi is provided and private parking is available on site. The okyakuya ryokan’s history is amazing. I learned a lot.

Kurokawa Onsen Yama no Yado Shinmeikan features 5 hot-spring baths, including a 30-metre long cave bath. Good dinner and breakfast. Lots of hot springs each having its own personality. I'd like to visit Shinmeikan again.

Located in the centre of Kurokawa Onsen, Oyado Noshiyu offers outdoor and indoor hot-spring baths, Japanese-style accommodations and a traditional teahouse. Beautiful Japanese ryokan with amazing Onsen hot springs. The staff presented us with incredible hospitality, a true ryokan experience. The room was large, clean and very comfortable. The included dinner and breakfast were unique and excellent, mainly consisting of traditional local cuisine that enhanced our overall express. One of the best highlights of our Japan trip!

Located in the centre of Kurokawa Onsen area, Yumerindo offers with river views. Guests can enjoy the on-site hot spring bath. Free WiFi is accessible in public areas. Very friendly stuff , nice garden + tranquil sounds

Situated in the centre of the Kurokawa Onsen Area and boasting a total of 8 indoor/outdoor hot spring baths, Nanjoen offers traditional Japanese-style accommodation with tatami (woven-straw) flooring... Everything; the hospitality of the staff, kaiseki in private dining room, the room, and private onsen.

Boasting various indoor and open-air hot spring baths, Fumoto Ryokan offers traditional Japanese-style accommodation with a historic charm. It is surrounded by serene greenery next to a river. We like the accommodation, the private onsen facilities, the location, the food, the shuttle service from and to the express bus stops, and of course most importantly the staff of the Ryokan. The Kaiseki dinner was served in our room and the Ryokan had accommodated our dietary request. Special shout out to 陈婷, the staff handling our dinner, bedding arrangement and breakfast. We felt so relaxed and welcomed. Thank you for making our trip such a wonderful one and our Ryokan onsen experience a memorable one.

39 km from Mount Aso, Yamashinobu is a recently renovated property set in Minamioguni and offers air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi and private parking. It was good, but also very Japanese. Perhaps give the possibility to choose a few "Western" add ons.
