Incredible location in a very quiet part of town. Lots of temples in the direct vicinity. We were able to participate in temple rituals in the morning, and dinner and breakfast were both delicious.

The location can't be beat. Perfectly halfway between Nara and Osaka, the ryokan itself is tucked away on this incredible pedestrian street, leading up to a beautiful temple that you might have all to yourself to explore. And you get there by cat car! The whole thing feels like stumbling on a wonderful secret. Excellent traditional breakfast, the hosts are so lovely and accommodating. Can't recommend highly enough.

I like it’s a small traditional Japanese family style hotel located in the middle of the mountain that’s still close to the town Ikoma by driving. The clear city view from the tea room is spectacular: we enjoyed the sight of the town with the high elevation and mountain range close by. The warm city lights at night and neighboring beautiful cherry blossoms and magnolia blended in the background of green hills under daylight are memorable. The host is also very accommodating: she speaks English and understands us well without too much trouble. On top of making arrangements for tea ceremony and kimono fitting (of course with additional charge), she can provide very good traditional Japanese breakfast. We didn’t try dinner there but I am sure it would be good. It’s about an hour drive away from Nara, Osaka, Tokyo, and other major cities in Kansai. Would highly recommend to people who want to experience what want to explore the city at daytime but want to experience a different vibe to stay outside of the city area at night.

The staff was incredible. So very nice and gracious, and very helpful. Limited English, so knowing basics and apps came in handy.
Food was delicious! Way too much, but rather have too much than be left hungry.
Views and seclusion was nice. Close to temple and farm.

The staff was exceptional welcoming!
It was wonderful that we were given a choice between a traditional Kaiseki or the Asuka Nabe for our second night dinner. The Asuka Nabe was savoury and other side dishes were delicious as well.
We will definitely recommend Wakasa Annex to other family members.

This is the worst Ryokan experience. For over $550 a night, this hotel is a joke! The room is very small, and lack electrical outlets to plug in our own electric devices to recharge - we had to unplug the TV in order to plug in the plastic electric tea kettle to heat water for tea. The dining experience was also terrible - since this place does not have a dining room, both breakfasts and dinners had to be served in room - which would have been OK except the food was very bad, the fish stale, and I found black spots on the strawberry they were serving. The dinner process was long and drawn out over close to two hours because the maid would come and deliver one dish, then wait for another twenty minutes to deliver another dish. By the time dinner was finally over, we were exhausted. The first dinner was so bad, we forgo our money and went elsewhere for the second night's dinner which we had already paid for - yes it was that bad and we could not put ourselves through that again.
I have had wonderful experiences with ryokans in other cities in Japan, and this one was a fraud. Avoid at all cost.

Very traditional Japanese stay experience. The tatami is very comfortable.
Host is wonderful and very communicative over the app. She cooked us an amazing traditional Japanese breakfast.
Experience culture authentically with a stay at these traditional Japanese-style accommodations. Sleep on the floor (on a futon roll) in a room furnished with tatami flooring and sliding doors. Guests can often expect access to a communal bath, plus a complimentary Japanese garment called a yukata.
This was a magical and wonderful experience that will stay in our hearts for ever.
The temple location in the mountain was very quiet, futons were really confortable, both meals were delicious and delicate and we could attend two different prayers early in the morning and experience mediation time with a monk. The temple grounds are nice to walk around in the evening.
Thank you.
It was an exceptional experience. The reception was super warm and friendly, from the moment we arrived they offered us tea. The temples are impressive and the landscapes will take your breath away. The lodging building was impeccably clean and organized, the rooms were gigantic, and the treatment of the staff and both the dinner and breakfasts were exemplary experiences. The onsen (the traditional baths) was the highlight of the experience.
But attending the ceremonies, especially the fire ritual is a unique experience not to be missed.
Staying here was such a brilliant, unique experience and hands down one of our favourite moments from travelling in Japan. The food was amazing and getting to walk around the temple grounds at night, when they were virtually empty, felt like a real treat. The fire ceremony was beautiful to watch and the onsen facilities were great too - a really nice size for the amount of guests and open for long hours in the evening.
