Very interesting town but you do need a Guide to take you to the areas as they are very spread out. Dien Bien Phu is a very busy bustling town, the museum although recently opened is not wearing very well but the presentation is very interesting. 2 days is enough to get an idea. We travelled overland from Laos, the border has only been open around 5 years and therefore there aren't many tourists or any information boards in English so without a Guide I think it would be extremely difficult.
We loved the market, the surrounding villages, the fact that there are few tourists. We ate and organised two day trips through the lovely family at Yen Ninh vegetarian restaurant and had a wonderful time in Dien Bien Phu. The people we met were all friendly and we enjoyed ourselves much more than expected.

The victory of May 7, 1954 gave inspiration to all peoples fighting against colonialism and for self-determination. The city has a beautiful mountain range not far off, and the people are kind, gracious and friendly.
The highest quality stay (by far!) that I've had after over 2 months of travel in southeast Asia! The owner and staff were wonderfully accommodating immediately upon arrival, allowing me to check in a tad early when I arrived by bicycle. The room I was given was stunning, beautifully decorated and pristinely cleaned. The place feels brand new! The location couldn't be better. Cannot recommend this hotel enough. 10/10 worth a stay if you're in Dien Bien Phu!

Basic accommodation, but great value for money. Clean. Receptionist helped us to get on the right bus to Hanoi. Online chat via Booking.com to the owner helped support us and find our way back to Dien Bien when we weren't allowed to exit Vietnam at Tay Trang . Nice family run basic eatery next door.
