Kathmandu and surrounding Kathmandu Valley make a fantastic holiday destination. The city is rather chaotic and noisy but full of colour and history. It is a friendly and safe place to stay. It doesn't take long to travel out into the peaceful countryside where you can revel in the stunning scenery. Travel a little further and there are a host of exciting activities, mountain biking, white water rafting, paragliding and of course trekking. There are lots of excellent restaurants serving traditional Nepali dishes or international food. Kathmandu is steeped in Nepal's fascinating culture so plan a long visit there is so much to explore.
Very authentic ancient Newari city. I found Bhaktapur to be the most culturally rich area of the Kathmandu Valley. Winding brick streets, local artisans, authentic cuisine and many people in traditional Nepali clothing. You can easily spend 2-3 days exploring Bhaktapur and the surrounding area.
Absolutely mad place. Lots of things going on all the time. So pleased I decided to go! Also did a little 3 day hike in Kathmandu Valley and that was just brilliant.
The architecture is varied, with some very refined Newari buildings around the Durbar Square (some damaged, some being meticulously reconstructed) and Tibetan influences too. Patan has considerably less dust and fewer touts than Thamel, but taxi prices are very high. Some of the best cafes in the Kathmandu valley are here.
Kathmandu is the Vatican of Hinduism and Buddhism! It is not a trekking destination. But the Kathmandu valley has so much to offer on its own. Though crowded and perhaps not the cleanest of cities, there is an overall aura of tranquility about the place. There are so many places to see and so much history to explore! The "Durbar Square" of Kathmandu - and its respective namesakes in Bhaktapur and Patan - summarize the history of Nepal's culture, tradition and strong influence of the Royal families that ruled the country over the centuries. Needless to say, each one is a great spot for souvenir shopping. It is a real pity some architectural treasures were destroyed in the recent earthquake. A little beyond Bhaktapur is a very popular tourist spot called Nagarkot. It is well worth waking up in the wee hours of morning to make the 45-minute drive up the hill. For tea drinkers, Nepal offers a unique treat with its blends of organic green tea, (black) masala tea and so many other fragrant varieties. For coffee drinkers, the Himalayan Java is a must-try! The rich aroma will dominate wherever it is stored. Beer lovers, too, will not be disappointed with "Gurkha", the local brew. Food-wise, a plate of momos is one street food to definitely sample. Local food is generally spicy, and for the average Asian palate, delicious! Non-Asians would do well to specify making their orders non-spicy or mildly spicy.
Historically, Kathmandu Valley is the world's best destination to find out the oldest architectures and monuments. It is also one of the oldest countries of civilization and is rich in religious values and norms. There's always a lot to do in Kathmandu from day hiking to cycling and site seeing to relaxation. Thamel is the happening place where we can find bars, pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels which are easily accessible. If you are looking for a budget effective holiday package, Nepal is a complete package for you..
About a week in Kathmandu is plenty to see all the sights in the greater Kathmandu Valley. The traffic will wear you down, and will prevent seeing too much in a day.
A wonderful city, worthy of a 3-4 days stay, at least! Be sure to visit the neighboring Kathmandu valley also. We did a fabulous 2 day trip with local buses, trucks and taxis and lots of walking through little villages. Had a fabulous time!!!
Kathmandu valley is full of prospect for everyone weather you are looking for a fun filled adventures, dance bars, pubs for enjoying a peasant night life, tracking, pilgrimage tour, want to live like a saint with minimum basic amenities or want a real lavish life style, you get it all. Actually I can say like Kathmandu is filled with all the seven colours of rainbow. Only peace of advice Is that you be careful with your belongings like mobile or wallet and be extra careful with the girls at dance bars, they have only one mission to make you loose your pocket with heavy bills.
Best place for nature lovers. Pollution free fresh air, amazing view of Kathmandu Valley and wonderful sunrise view in the morning make feel the importance of nature. Love the place!!! WoW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bhaktapur
All the beds have curtains, even the top bunks, and the sheets and blankets are incredibly soft and comfortable. The dining area is cozy with a nice view on a pond. All the facilities were kept very clean, and the staff was very friendly. The hostel has a partner homestay nearby with a rooftop terrace. You can watch the sunset from there or do your morning yoga with a beautiful view over Kathmandu valley.
Bhaktapur is an undiscovered jewel in Kathmandu Valley. Hotel Traditional is ideally located as close to Bhaktapur's lovely Durbar Square as one can get. In sharp contract to chaotic Thamel in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur is quiet and peaceful. One gets the feeling of what traditional Nepal is really like in this charming place. And Hotel Traditional is a nice place from which to enjoy it.
Nagarkot
Small friendly little homestay. Very basic, but comfortable with a hot shower and alright wifi. Breakfast was ok, but the owner would do whatever he could to make you comfortable. it's a bit out of town with a uphill walk, with that said the hotels in town didn't look great. one massive bonus here is tou get the most amazing sunsets over the Kathmandu valleys
Enthusiastic hotel staff. Delicious breakfast 🥞. Clean garden restaurant Kathmandu Grill attached with the Aawas Boutique. Great hospitality. 24 hrs reception open for Room guests. Best location for day/night city tour, sightseeing around the Kathmandu valley. I had a wonderful vacation this year. I thank you all for everything.
Divine Kathmandu Hotel is as the name suggests, it's just divine! Very comfortable rooms, stunning rooftop pool overlooking Kathmandu Valley, wonderful breakfasts and staff who are attentive to any questions or requests you may have. Definitely will be staying at Divine when next back in Kathmandu.
The staff were very friendly and the hotel has an absilutely fascinating location on top of the hill with a beautiful view on Himalays. You will enjoy the views on Himalays and kathmandu valley that you will remember for a lifetime.
Nagarkot
The views of the mountains and the Kathmandu valley were wonderful. The room was clean and had everything you needed: kettle, wifi, fridge, spotless linen. The staff was wonderful. The restaurant was lovely.
Staff were very accommodating, the room I got on the 5th floor was very spacious). There were ample "sp[aces" to hang around in the hotel. The breakfast area is the largest I have seen in Nepal. Great garden as well, with an outdoor pool at the end. And finally, I have to commend their Wi-Fi.
We had a large room which was perfect for our last few days in Nepal for packing & sorting. The bed was comfy, big bathroom with large bench. A kitchen area with fridge, kettle, water etc with bench space. Lounge area with couch & coffee table. Breakfast had lots of options but we went out for a decent coffee. It was easy to navigate the neighborhood from here.
Wow - this new building and the rooms are amazing. Was such a pleasant surprise to have such a big new room - very flash - loved it. Breakfast buffet was amazing, garden is so beautiful to sit in. Staff friendly and helpful. Have stayed here 3-4 times over the last 20 years and its still the best place to stay in Thamel - even though it has grown so big - it is still cozy and friendly.
Staff was very friendly and helpful, very good breakfast and dinner. Thank you!
The staff were friendly, rooms very clean.
THE STAY AT THIS BEAUTIFUL PLACE MUST BE EXPERIENCED IF YOU EVER COME TO KATHMANDU! EXCEPTIONAL!!!
Breakfast was outstanding, healthy choices for vegetarians and non veg alike. Staff was beyond gracious, welcoming and helpful! Special thanks to Bedant and the front desk staff, everything with a warm smile, amazing welcome to Kathmandu! You can swim in the pool overlooking Kathmandu! Comfortable beds and hot showers!
What a wonderful retreat hotel - everyone is so kind and the activities included were flexible and enjoyable. We had no idea so much would be offered to us beyond just a nice "hotel with breakfast included"
The staff went extra Mille, super friendly and extremely helpful. The place was very close to nice restaurants and places. Buaaah, the bed was amazing - so confortable!!!
The hotel is beautiful and in a beautiful setting. I just wish they had indoor actives readily available and accessible for when the weather is not so nice we probably would have stayed at least another night or two.
