buy the 5 day JR pass and 3 day wakayama bus pass. Prepare to spend 3-4 days to walk the pilgrimage trail
Hongu is the town right in the middle of the peninsula of Wakayama that sits in the center of many of the Kumano Kodo hikes. Beautiful all around with tons of great trails and hikes to do and sights to see, especially Nachi Falls. Tips for those wanting to travel in Hongu: -Have tons of 100,1000 yen currency. In order to get around the Hongu area requires intermitten buses that can get expensive. Be prepared to spend up to 1250 JPY for each leg of the bus. Plan your trip as there as well, as there are big gaps in the bus times (especially around noon).
We love the location of this hotel just 5mins walking distance from the Wakayama station and Bus station. It is near a mall so it's easy for us to find an atm. The hotel provides breakfast, though it is the same menu most of the days We feel it's an added advantage to get us to kick start the day. We are not picky eaters. The bed is comfortable, though it is small but it is what we expected in Japan. No surprise. Staff are helpful when we want to drop our luggage before check in. Overall I will stay here again .
We had an amazing and awesome experience at Wakayama Urban Hotel. First and foremost, the staff at the front desk were very kind and professional - top notch. The hotel feel was very luxurious. The room size was good. Another bonus - the hotel is only 5 min walk to a decent-size supermarket. Breakfast was served on a second floor. We found our breakfast time was super relaxing - probably the music they played, the luxurious setting, or the open view to the lobby we don't know...- just simply incredible!!!
Mercure wakayama is one of the best hotel in wakayama.. The room is really spacious..really big enough for 3 people..we booked mountain view room. Even though the location quite take some time to walk from the nearest sea.. But the location is very good.. We really like the outdoor onsen n the cleanliness of the onsen facility.. We also like the breakfast buffet in the morning.. There is also a shuttle bus to go here n from the train station., it's really helpful for the tourist
This is a nice hotel in a very good location, next to the JR Wakayama train station and Kintetsu department store. Staff members were nice and my room was clean. Of all the places I stayed during my trip to Japan, I had the best night's rest at Hotel Granvia, because the bed in my room had a good mattress. Breakfast was very good, but please note it starts at 7:00 am, which could be an issue if you are catching an early morning train.
I liked that it was close to the station and was down the main street. I loved the sauna kept at 100 degrees C. and the 10 degrees C. cold rinse. The breakfast had a lot of Japanese foods to sample as well as some western food. Washing machine is free but dryer requires coins. Wakayama is a big city with wide streets and traffic, location is near to bus stops and one day trips with trains are easily negotiated.
Wakayama
Staff is welcoming and helpful, and the shared bathroom is very clean, the dorm has 5 toilets and normally no need to wait. Even there’s no staff from 9am - 5pm, you can store the luggage on the 1st floor at Hotel Granvia with 24h front desk. The property is with high value, and the location is just near the Wakayama JR station, and the door is connected with Kintetsu store.
Wakayama
This is a special hostel in Wakayama. Hiroko is so inviting and went over maps and the free bike rentals when we arrived so that we would know more about fun activities. The hostel is beautiful and clean. We loved staying there. We also really enjoyed being in Wakayama City and biking around to the castle, gardens and exploring around. It was a great location!!
Candeo hotels is our favorite as usual but this one is really the best we have experienced. Very well located inside the Wakayama train station. Staff is very helpful, great izakaya recommendations for dinner. Japanese bath is beyond expectations (even compared to other Candeo hotels). True open-air bath with no privacy screen and view on the city for men.
Breakfast was very good, catering more for Japanese taste. The set up was nice. You can see beautiful sunset. We liked the lawn and the outdoor setting for breakfast. Wakayama castle is worth a visit, but if you come from from Europe Marina City is nothing you need to visit unless you have small children who would like to go to an amusement park.
I must've paid for the room upgrade because I was on one of the highest floors with a view of Wakayama castle. I could've spent all day looking out the window. And then the castle lit up at night as well. The restaurant was spacious and the breakfast buffet included an omelet bar and cereal as well as the usual Japanese and Western fare.
Tanabe
The location is perfect; it is only a 5 minute walk to the Kii Tanabe station where you would have access to all kinds of transportation. The guesthouse is actually a traditional Japanese residence which has a very authentic feel. The host is kind and multilingual. It is an excellent base to explore the southern part of Wakayama Prefecture.
Wakayama
Our favourite guesthouse on our entire trip to Japan. Loved the building and the decor, very big and well equipped room and a roof terrace to enjoy too. The communal areas looked great and were so nice to hang out in. The staff here are all really lovely and so welcoming! We loved this place and Wakayama city so much ❤️
Tanabe
Lovely to stay and enjoy the delicious food and tranquility. I only wish we had stayed longer. Very interesting to hear Giovanni's story of developing the accommodation and preserving Japanese culture in Wakayama. Comfortable bed and space. We were nice and warm despite the freezing temperatures outside!
The staff was super nice, tbh wakayama is an area where english is very limited yet the staffs did so and tried their best and that deserves to be a reason why this hotel is a good place to stay if you're on a budget but still want to try and explore the wonderful city that ia wakayama
Katsuura
Handy location to Nachi Falls and other areas I came to Wakayama to see. Dtunning view from the rooms that was so serene, room was large for Japanese standards was great to spread out and the outdoor onsen was a dream ! Would love to return some day ☺️
- Conveniently located, just 3 mins walk from Wakayama station - there’s an onsen at the hotel which is a nice surprise, it really helped washing away our fatigue from the travel - the buffet breakfast at the hotel is quite nice - room is very clean
This apartment was amazing value for money! I only stayed a couple days, but it would be a great place to use as a base for exploring Wakayama. The apartment was clean and nicely decorated, and the kitchen was well equipped.
Best option to save money on a short trip to Wakayama. I know this is a short stay hotel and many times used as hotel for adults and couples, but all was clean and neat. Staff was really polite too. Can't complain!
Wakayama
Not expensive, about 50$ for a night, close to wakayama station, breakfast included. Spatious room overall when compared to other hotels in japan. Staff very nice and private. Lots of amenities available.
A magical place - we got the Japanese room with a river view and it was the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of Wakayama. The onsen was also a highlight as well as nearby hikes.
