Don't miss opportunities east of the city, best accessed via local train line. A 20-minute ride gets you to the Yashima station and the Shikoku-Mura exhibit of old structures that have been brought there from all across Japan (plus a rope-bridge entrance that's a rail-gripping challenge, avoidable if you prefer). Right in the middle of the property, after 30-40 minutes of reading informative boards and entering the ancient structures, comes a Tadeo Ando contemporary museum of characteristic concrete and glass and engaging geometric perspectives that has a spectacular water garden cascading down the hillside. Go two stops further on the train to view Isamu Noguchi's studio and sculptures. You'll also do well to sample the region's noodles, which are purportedly the best in Japan.
Takamatsu can be the basis to visit the whole Shikoku through the train network.
Dogo onsen in Matsuyama is Japan`s oldest onsen and is popular with not only tourists but also the locals, which is not always the case with local tourist sites. Matsuyama is one of the largest cities in Shikoku, so there`s a good variety of stores including lots of convenience stores for travelers. The Super Jet between Hiroshima and Matsuyama is a picturesque trip and surprisingly smooth even with choppy water. Matsuyama is an out-of-the-way location for most tourists, but a great place to stay and unwind, and safe at night.
This gem in Shikoku is certainly off the beaten path and worth the voyage via train and bus. (The staff picked us up at the bus stop upon our arrival and dropped us off at the same stop subsequent to checking out.) The combination of sea, green mountains and various flora and fauna makes for a perfect holiday for those who adore nature and want a break from the metropolis like Tokyo or Osaka. This isn't a place to simply stay indoors although the onsen is the draw for Japanese guests (we never even stepped inside). For eight days my boyfriend and I explored nature around Otsuki, and rented a canoe to explore the nearby cove. There's park about 3 miles away from the hotel and we were virtually the only ones to enjoy the seaside in that area at the time (the last week of June of this year, just when summer starts). Our room was very spacious and included modern amenities (although wireless internet is not available which was the least of our concerns) and the balcony afforded us with a breathtaking view of the cove adorned by mountain and forest. Our stay at Bellreef could not have been relaxing and comfortable if it weren't for the gracious staff who were always ready to assist us with any inquiry or concern. This is a holiday for the books. My boyfriend and I loved it there.
Great historical garden, A good starting point to explore the inland sea islands and part of Shikoku. A quiet small town.
Miyoshi is a very scenic area in the middle of Shikoku. It's main attractions are short hikes, great viewpoints from high river banks and mountains, local cuisine and of course the Japanese public bath- onsens. It is greatly advised that even if traveling by train with JR Pass or other methods you still rent a car for daily use when in Miyoshi because public transportation in the region itself is pretty scarce and doesn't have a satisfying outreach and coverage to the most recommended spots.
The city is surprisingly metropolitan for Shikoku. Lots of great food. It also has access to many great nature sites.
I really love matsuyama! I catch the beautiful sunset here and its amazing. Also i came to the shikoku carusuto in the night and the view there beyond words! You can see milky way also some shooting star. Not to forget the oldest onsen, Dago Onsen and some hot water that spread around there to dip your legs out. Definitely the best experience i ever had in this summer trip.
Muroto
A very quiet and beautiful place. My second trip to Japan is a pilgrimage trip. Shikoku is a very mysterious island of gods. Especially the nearby caves around here have special powers! Ever since I read history of Kukai, I've wanted to come here. The host of this guest house is very kind and friendly. Spanish cuisine is also recommended. After a long walk, I fell asleep on the comfortable bed. A traditional Japanese futon is good, but I thought a bed was indispensable for a tired body. Thank you!
Miyoshi
If you’re looking for a relaxing place with great atmosphere and amazing view, you have to stay there. The host is super nice. The apartment we stayed in is like an old country house with three rooms and a living & kitchen area (fully equipped). View from the porch is spectacular with great BBQ in the evening (we brought our own groceries, not sure if this would be needed). We would highly recommend staying here and explore beautiful Shikoku (esp. Iya valley)!
Great value for money and the staff is really kind. The lady doesn't speak English but can use Google Translate. I speak a little Japanese and she was happy to chat with me. The building and rooms are a little old but the rooms are spacious and the beds comfortable, which is nice if you want to have a good night sleep after a long days of walking the Shikoku pilgrimage. I ordered the Japanese breakfast, which was huge and freshly cooked every morning.
This is the third Comfort Hotel that I stayed at in Shikoku. Its a reliable budget friendly chain that is entirely non smoking. The room was comfortable clean and there was a choice of pillows as I found the one in the room too hard. The breakfast buffet is simple but adequate. The library is a nice place to relax. The hotel offers a map with restaurant suggestions. There was a large parking lot. I will stay at this chain of hotels again .
Ochi
The guesthouse is an amazing place to stay if you want to experience the stunning nature Shikoku has to offer around Niyodagawa and Ochi. Takao and his wife are wonderful hosts who will make sure you have an amazing time and are willing to help you out with everything you need to know about the area. The guesthouse itself was great if you're looking for a traditional Japanese accomodation. The facilities are clean and well maintained.
It was a pleasure being at this great location on the beach of the Pacific. The pension is like a quiet resort, with a private beach on a small bay, which is also a favourite spot for the golden eagle. The optional dinner (order 1 day in advance) was excellent. For us it was a fine stop between the mountains of Shikoku and the Nara peninsula. We had a spacious cabin with a bathroom. An additional Japanese bathroom can be used as well.
The free breakfast is good, a lot of variety of Japanese breakfast. The location is just next to Marugame Station. The check in and check out process is automated and fast. The view from our room in 14th floor is really beautiful since we can enjoy the panorama of the city of Marugame with mountain and sea background, and also the Seto Chashi Bridge which across the sea from Shikoku island to Honshu island.
Otoyocho
We greatly enjoyed our stay! The hosts were so friendly, welcoming and hospitable, and made sure to do everything to ensure we had a wonderful stay. It was really nice getting to know them and their family. Everything was perfect, and the food was AMAZING: the very best food we've had during our trip in Japan. It was a wonderful experience and we can highly recommend staying here when visiting Shikoku!
Zentsuji
Welcomed by an amazing and helpful host I immediately felt home. The place has this hostel feeling, especially from the outside. I stayed a few nights, mainly because it was cheap and it was easy to visit the surrounding Shikoku 88 temples. It has a little kitchenette including a microwave to heat up food. The host also gave me thorough information about how to get to places, very kind and helpful!
They prepare a 2000yen dinner on request, japanese food with locally sourced products. Do not pass on it it is amazing. The hosts are very friendly, they explained us all about the food, helped us finding activities to do in the surroundings. The rooms were quite spacious with very comfortable beds / futon. Would definitely go again anytime if I were back in Shikoku!
Nahari
I can’t say enough nice things about this place. This is the best place I have stayed in since I arrived in Japan 10 days ago. The host was incredibly welcoming and generous and I was made to feel at home. The location is great for anyone doing the Shikoku Henro as it is very close to the route. Thank you for such a great experience.
Muroto
The cute vintage charm of the place mixed with directly on the beach location made this my favorite stay so far of my shikoku pilgrimage. Kind and attentive staff with great english ability helped me feel welcome and comfortable during me stay even though I don’t speak japanese. The bath was wonderful and the breakfast was delicious!
We were a family of 3 (parents and adult son) travelling on a driving trip around Shikoku. The apartment, though a little older, was very well-equipped and conveniently located near shops and a food market. It was clean and comfortable for our overnight stay. The car park is just a minute's walk away.
Awesome location that is walking distance from the train station and several eateries. A convenient stopover before commencing on travels to the rest of Shikoku. Amenities were well maintained, room was extremely clean (as with most if not all Japanese accommodation) and well thought out amenities!
We hadn't planned on staying in Saijo, but because no other hotels were available in Western Shikoku, we decided to go there. We were pleasantly surprised. Very nice hotel with friendly staff and clean comfy rooms. Bonus was the bath on the top floor and relatively easy to access expressway.
Zentsuji
Since it is a former love Hotel it is adult only, looks like a castle, quiet. Spacious very clean room, convenient to visit some of the temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Convenience store close by, some food can be ordered in the room. Unbeatable for this price.
Sakaide
A perfect stay! This is the best accommodation for our Shikoku trip. The room is decorated with authentic Japanese style and well maintained. The landlord is very kind and have the genuine Otemachi. Also, the hotel is quite near the station.
Yoshinogawa
This small inn is right next to Temple #11, Fujideri ,on the O'Henro 88 temple trek on the lovely island of Shikoku, Japan. The inn just opened recently, perhaps 3 months ago. Great location for hikers tackling trail to Temple 12.
Sanuki
Friendly service, clean spaces, well-stocked kitchen, quiet room. Tek-Tek celebrates pilgrims, but the hostel is a great option for any solo traveler exploring Shikoku.
Otoyocho
Great little getaway in rural Shikoku. Traditional Japanese house with kitchen facilities and an amazing fire pit. The outdoor toilet and shower had a great view.
