Hotel in Ino
Facing the beachfront, そらやまゲストハウス Sorayama guesthouse offers 2-star accommodation in Ino and has a shared lounge, garden and terrace. Our best stay during our three week Japan trip in 2024 with 8 people in total (including a toddler and kindergarten aged kid). The hosts are very nice, the breakfast and dinner they provided for us was exceptional, and the view from our room was great, too. They take great care to be ecologically mindful. Everything was very clean. The owners also provided us with valuable info on what to do during our stay in Kochi, so we had a blast exploring the beautiful nature surrounding this guesthouse.

In addition to that, the staff here were extremely helpful and attentive. They helped me with everything, from arranging and communicating with the taxi driver, providing breakfast even when I check out early, giving advices about places that I want to visit to helping me with the booking of new flight ticket when my flight got cancelled out of nowhere. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Bathrooms were amazing with giant wooden tubs and nice toiletries. Food was fantastic - Japanese with French influences. I almost never give 10 but this place really deserved it.

The Dogo area with the onsen, the station and the Arcade make old times come to life. Visitors of the onsen getting a breath of fresh air walking in kimono make for beautiful images. Matsuyama is also a good starting point to visit temples 46 to 53 from the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Temples 52 and 53 can easily be reached from station Iyo-Wake, for 46-50 go to Takanoko or Kume station (Yogowara-line). Temple 51 is a short walk from Dogo Park.
Lovely city and you can walk from the centre to Dogo. It takes about 30mns and there are lots to see in this city and its surrounding. Visited Deer island where locals do not go and very few tourists do, so you have the whole island to yourself. Just lovely. Went to Oshima island and walked to Mount Kiro for the view but unfortunately it was overcast so could not see much. Visited the Zoo in Tobe and used all their local transportation. They have a very good tourist info in Matsuyama JR station with people who will try their best to give you the most of what to see and experience with their limited English. Shikoku was great and so was Matsuyama. Walked through the castle ground and went all the way to the top and had a fabulous view over the city. Went to Dogo Onsen and enjoyed it. This place is a must. Travelled with their tram (old and new). Walked through their arcade and enjoyed delicious food and especially at Chococro their coffee and cakes. & days in the city and could have stayed longer.
The best thing we find is an efficient Tourist Information Centre that can help with translating bus schedules and suggest ways to be more efficient. The Information Centre just outside the JR Kochi Station was very good. We were walking to the 88 Temples of the Shikoku pilgrimage and the staff were great to help me timetable myself to get to 4 Temples over 4 days. We also enjoyed the Sunday street market, a few hours arounf Kochi Castle and a leisurely cycle ride around the centre of town.
Kochi, like much of Shikoku, is overlooked by many travellers, however it has a lot to offer. The food is amazing (both in Hirome and beyond), the people extremely friendly, and there are some great vistas around the city. Makino Garden is a great monument to the father of Japanese botany, Kochi-Jo is one of the few remaining original castles in Japan, and Katsurahama is worth a visit on a fine day. I also recommend the Sunday market in central Kochi.
Matsuyama is located on Shikoku. An island of mainland Japan that is quickly forgotten, and treated like some kind of backwater area. Matsuyama is one of the larger cities on Shikoku, and offers access to the finer beauties of Shikoku. It has a nice castle, and a few long shopping districts. The real beauty of Shikoku is in the food and the valleys to the east. A place worth visiting for scenic beauty.
I was doing the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, so I didn`t really do any activities in Saijo. It`s a pleasant town-I`ve visited before when my friends lived there. I think there is a big autumn `chosa` festival (maybe in October?) that is well-known locally. There is a really big autumn festival in Niihama, the town two train stops away.
Tokushima was easily accessible by bus directly from Kansai Airport and the local train network takes you directly to the Iya Valley to view the old vine bridges and take a boat ride down the Oboke gorge. For anyone embarking on the Henro pilgrimages to the 88 temples of Shikoku, Tokushima is the start of the journey
The hosts and their children were just amazing - kind, interesting, hospitable family with very energetic, fun, gorgeous kids. Instead of staying in hotels that are the same around the world, it was an opportunity to get to know a very interesting Japanese family who have made a conscious choice to forgo the hectic city life for one of much greater independence, beauty and freedom in the gorgeous mountains of Shikoku. This was clearly one of the most most memorable parts of our whole Japan tour, particularly for our kids.
A relaxed and beautiful provincial Japanese city. The city is nestled on the coast of Shikoku island, and looks out over the Seto Inland sea. We found it friendly, relaxed and has everything you need in a small sized city. We visited the magnificent Ritsurin Gardens which are quite exceptional, had a long soak at Busshozen Onsen which is a short suburban train trip away from Takamatsu central station, enjoyed some delicious food at some of the many great restaurants near the JR Hotel Clement where we stayed ( I highly recommend it). It is a perfect launching place to take ferry trips to the art Islands, Teshima and Naoshima which are only 30-45 minutes ferry ride away so are easy day trips.
Takamatsu is a little quiet town good for that 2-3 days trip. It is located at the island of Shikoku in Kagawa Prefecture aka Udon Prefecture. It is famous for its sanuki udon and you can get all good udon around the city and prefecture. The Ritsurin garden is Takamatsu's gem beautiful garden amidst the backdrop of hills. Take a nice ride into the countryside to towards the Kotoden Kotohira area for a little hike up the hill (approx 1000 stairs!). The climb was worth it to see the surrounding hills. If you like a little peace and quiet, escaping from the hustle and bustle of city life, why not pop by Takamatsu and the other prefectures of Shikoku.
Muroto
A very quiet and beautiful place. My second trip to Japan is a pilgrimage trip. Shikoku is a very mysterious island of gods. Especially the nearby caves around here have special powers! Ever since I read history of Kukai, I've wanted to come here. The host of this guest house is very kind and friendly. Spanish cuisine is also recommended. After a long walk, I fell asleep on the comfortable bed. A traditional Japanese futon is good, but I thought a bed was indispensable for a tired body. Thank you!
It was perfect! We had regrets not staying more ! The host are really welcoming and attentionned! They both spoke very well english, so if your Japanese isn't perfect it worth mentionning :) The room was big compared to the usual standard, with a personnal lavatory and the terrace above the river. I would highly recommend when the weather is warmer! The guesthouse is well situated to discover the area, even Kochi is not that far in a car ! Definitely recommend if you visit Shikoku!
Miyoshi
If you’re looking for a relaxing place with great atmosphere and amazing view, you have to stay there. The host is super nice. The apartment we stayed in is like an old country house with three rooms and a living & kitchen area (fully equipped). View from the porch is spectacular with great BBQ in the evening (we brought our own groceries, not sure if this would be needed). We would highly recommend staying here and explore beautiful Shikoku (esp. Iya valley)!
Great value for money and the staff is really kind. The lady doesn't speak English but can use Google Translate. I speak a little Japanese and she was happy to chat with me. The building and rooms are a little old but the rooms are spacious and the beds comfortable, which is nice if you want to have a good night sleep after a long days of walking the Shikoku pilgrimage. I ordered the Japanese breakfast, which was huge and freshly cooked every morning.
This is the third Comfort Hotel that I stayed at in Shikoku. Its a reliable budget friendly chain that is entirely non smoking. The room was comfortable clean and there was a choice of pillows as I found the one in the room too hard. The breakfast buffet is simple but adequate. The library is a nice place to relax. The hotel offers a map with restaurant suggestions. There was a large parking lot. I will stay at this chain of hotels again .
Ochi
The guesthouse is an amazing place to stay if you want to experience the stunning nature Shikoku has to offer around Niyodagawa and Ochi. Takao and his wife are wonderful hosts who will make sure you have an amazing time and are willing to help you out with everything you need to know about the area. The guesthouse itself was great if you're looking for a traditional Japanese accomodation. The facilities are clean and well maintained.
It was a pleasure being at this great location on the beach of the Pacific. The pension is like a quiet resort, with a private beach on a small bay, which is also a favourite spot for the golden eagle. The optional dinner (order 1 day in advance) was excellent. For us it was a fine stop between the mountains of Shikoku and the Nara peninsula. We had a spacious cabin with a bathroom. An additional Japanese bathroom can be used as well.
Otoyocho
We greatly enjoyed our stay! The hosts were so friendly, welcoming and hospitable, and made sure to do everything to ensure we had a wonderful stay. It was really nice getting to know them and their family. Everything was perfect, and the food was AMAZING: the very best food we've had during our trip in Japan. It was a wonderful experience and we can highly recommend staying here when visiting Shikoku!
Zentsuji
Welcomed by an amazing and helpful host I immediately felt home. The place has this hostel feeling, especially from the outside. I stayed a few nights, mainly because it was cheap and it was easy to visit the surrounding Shikoku 88 temples. It has a little kitchenette including a microwave to heat up food. The host also gave me thorough information about how to get to places, very kind and helpful!
Muroto
The cute vintage charm of the place mixed with directly on the beach location made this my favorite stay so far of my shikoku pilgrimage. Kind and attentive staff with great english ability helped me feel welcome and comfortable during me stay even though I don’t speak japanese. The bath was wonderful and the breakfast was delicious!
We were a family of 3 (parents and adult son) travelling on a driving trip around Shikoku. The apartment, though a little older, was very well-equipped and conveniently located near shops and a food market. It was clean and comfortable for our overnight stay. The car park is just a minute's walk away.
Awesome location that is walking distance from the train station and several eateries. A convenient stopover before commencing on travels to the rest of Shikoku. Amenities were well maintained, room was extremely clean (as with most if not all Japanese accommodation) and well thought out amenities!
We hadn't planned on staying in Saijo, but because no other hotels were available in Western Shikoku, we decided to go there. We were pleasantly surprised. Very nice hotel with friendly staff and clean comfy rooms. Bonus was the bath on the top floor and relatively easy to access expressway.
Zentsuji
Since it is a former love Hotel it is adult only, looks like a castle, quiet. Spacious very clean room, convenient to visit some of the temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Convenience store close by, some food can be ordered in the room. Unbeatable for this price.
Tokushima
Great hostel from where you can start the Shikoku 88 pilgrimage. They offer the possibility of leaving luggage behind that you can pick up after finishing the pilgrimage. It's a nice spot to meet either starting or finishing Ohenro's.
Sakaide
A perfect stay! This is the best accommodation for our Shikoku trip. The room is decorated with authentic Japanese style and well maintained. The landlord is very kind and have the genuine Otemachi. Also, the hotel is quite near the station.
Yoshinogawa
This small inn is right next to Temple #11, Fujideri ,on the O'Henro 88 temple trek on the lovely island of Shikoku, Japan. The inn just opened recently, perhaps 3 months ago. Great location for hikers tackling trail to Temple 12.
Sanuki
Friendly service, clean spaces, well-stocked kitchen, quiet room. Tek-Tek celebrates pilgrims, but the hostel is a great option for any solo traveler exploring Shikoku.
Otoyocho
Great little getaway in rural Shikoku. Traditional Japanese house with kitchen facilities and an amazing fire pit. The outdoor toilet and shower had a great view.
Clean, comfortable, and affordable business hotel with all basic facilities and amenities. Stayed here twice at the start and end of a Shikoku trip.
