It was wonderful to arrive to one of the kindest and warmest welcomes we have had in South America. The room was lovely, beautiful bathroom and comfortable bed with lovely linen. Fire set ready to start. It was my husbands birthday and they had made homemade chocolates and a card in our room, and recommended a restaurant to celebrate. We felt welcome and cared for. What a lovely couple.

If you are not going to Chile Chico, plan to go and to stay at the Hotel Posada del Rio it is truly great.

There is not much reason to come here except if you are taking the ferry to Laguna San Rafael, or coming/going from/to Puerto Montt. In town, there is no place where to eat or stay besides the Loberias del Sur Hote. However, 15 minutes by car you get to Puerto Aysen and you can eat in Isla Verde and in Los Amigos. Also you can visit Bahia Acantilada and Lago Riesco.
The small town has everything needed for a good base to explore the Aysen region of Northern Patagonia. From the town and nearby hikes, there are spectacular views of mountains and river valleys. Many National Reserves and Parks nearby. I was driving a rented pickup on the Carreterra Austral, the Southern Highway, and picked up many young people hitchhiking and camping. The area is so safe that even young women will be hitchhiking or bicycling and camping alone, without fear of assault. There is a great supermarket with every kind of food and beverage, and some very good restaurants. There is always salmon, beef and lamb on the menu, and better vegetables and soups than in many regular American restaurants. The best meal I had was in a new rustic style restaurant, Fogon Piedra del India, about 4 minutes out of the center by car. It overlooks a river, and the food is some of the best I've ever eaten. The better restaurants in Chile always have hot rolls or bread, and full sized paper napkins. To me it indicates they are becoming aware of what travelers from other places see as small but comfortable touches.The central plaza has artisan and craft sales, an nearby are coffee shops with espresso and good pastries to enjoy while on the free wifi. I've visited 3 times and will go back next year as my base from which to explore the quiet natural beauty of the mountains and rivers.
