The gardens were beautiful and lovely views of Mount. Fuji on a clear day. Onsen was great and well stocked with amenities. Really appreciated laundry facilities. Single unit washer and dryer adds soap automatically to load well for average ¥500 per load.
Breakfast and dinner were both delicious and beautiful. Stayed for 2 nights and would definitely stay here again in the future.

Wow what a nice hotel, perched above the lake in Hakone. Best way to get here is by taxi -- it's a steep climb. Each room has an individual private wooden tub on the porch, overlooking the beautiful valley and lake below. The English-speaking staff sought us out and were extremely solicitous. We got the half-board, and dinner (in formal pajamas) was sumptuous. Breakfast was also excellent.
Matsuzakaya Honten offers a hot spring bath and free private parking, and is within 8 miles of Hakone-Yumoto Station and 27 miles of Shuzen-ji Temple.

My wife and I had such an incredible stay at this ryokan! The service was impeccable, with such attention to detail and hospitality throughout our time there. Staying here felt like being transported in time, an absolutely authentic and unique experience. Best of all was the food: the meals were some of the best we’ve had during our entire trip to Japan, and was the part of the day we most looked forward to. The menu was new each day for dinner and breakfast and filled with fresh, flavorful, local ingredients that were unlike anything we’d tasted before.
Every member of the staff was super kind, polite, and they all spoke English. It was easy to get around Hakone and see all the sights from where we were located, but the area still felt secluded and private. Our stay was a 5-star experience and I would absolutely recommend Matsuzakaya Honten to any traveler in Hakone!

Amazing.
Amazing. We didn't know anything about the checkpoint before we visited Hakone - we just happened to come across it as we walked along the Tokaido Road. Definitely worth a visit and the information is in English.
