An amazing setting, a beautiful house full of history. Might be slightly off the State Highway but well worth the detour.

There was a lovely hamper on arrival - an added bonus - and we ordered the dinner hamper which was just yummy. Fresh meat for the BBQ and the most delicious salad - made for a perfect evening meal outside after a day of driving.

A large historic property that has been well converted with all modern facilities. It stands in its own grounds approached via a long gravel driveway. The couple that own it were perfect hosts - there to help but not intrusive. They did offer to...

If you are looking to get away from the rat race and enjoy the quiet, uncomplicated, country air, or maybe take time out on a working farm or fancy a spot of fishing in one of New Zealand's reverred trout and salmon rivers, then The Whare is the place to come. Built in 1914, The Whare served as the station cookhouse feeding the station's staff and visiting shearers until 1920 when it became the community centre housing the library, playcentre and church. Both the library and the church still remain, with services held once or twice a year. It is also available for small, intimate weddings. The Whare is situated in a picturesque part of the property, surrounded by established trees. In recent years it has been lovingly transformed into private accommodation, while retaining as much of its historical character as possible. It is fully equipped with a fabulous large open-plan kitchen and dining room complete with cosy open fire, separate bathroom featuring a clawfoot bath, and a snug area with log burner. There is also a large outdoor area with barbeque for those long summer evenings, as well as a well-stocked library of books and DVDs. Farming tours can also be arranged.
Alastair and Annie run a large sheep and cropping farming operation. The livestock enterprise consists of 1700 commercial Corriedale breeding ewes with lambs finished for export. The sheep produce about 12,000 kilograms of wool each year varying from 23-28 micron, which is sold mostly for apparel manufacture. The cropping enterprise involves mostly wheat and barley sold to a wide range of uses. Specialist seed crops are being added to the crop rotation as well as ground leased out for potatoes. Seed crops include carrot, red beet, rape, clover, peas, broccoli and ryegrass. The farm has a combination of dryland and irrigated pastures. While Alastair takes care of all of the day to day running of the farm, Annie also works as a freelance journalist and photographer.
Situated on the banks of the famed Rangitata River, The Whare is a fisherman's dream with an unprecedented 5km of river access directly from the farm, or you can fish in the surf with the Pacific Ocean less than 2kms away. Famous for its salmon fishery, it's also noted for its sea-run brown trout early in the season, as well as whitebait, while at other times of the year it is also possible to catch kahawai. Get active exploring the farm on foot or take a long walk along the nearby stony beach (NO swimming), feel free to bring your mountain bike with many farm tracks and the river bed or we can also provide accommodation for your equine friends if you would like to bring them as well to experience some safe farm riding. The surrounding area is also worth exploring too. Within 30 minutes of the property you'll find the picturesque town of Geraldine with its many great shops. It is also the home of the Talbot Forest Cheese factory and Barkers, as well as the notable Geraldine Vintage Car and Machinery Museum, one of the finest collects of vintage machinery in the Southern Hemisphere. Peel Forest with its native bush is also nearby, or take a drive to Lake Hood or Ashburton.
