We were surprised that Ashburton had the variety of shops, with the normal nationwide big box type outlets, but to my wife's delight was also well served by boutique local outlets, that seemed to be well supported by the locals. It was also notable to see that most of the Banks were located back from the main shopping areas, this shows that retailers are able to afford the prime positions and means a healthy town center.

Ashburton is roughly half way between the top and bottom of the South Island, so is a good place to stay if you are driving between the top and bottom of the South Island. Much easier and safer than trying to drive the length of the island in one day.

Love Ashburton. A wonderful place to visit. Go to the Library, get a Latte from the Cafe there, and a Cheese Roll, go to the Art Gallery, Domain Park, Retro stores, local shops, Antique Store and amazinf clothing stores, Basilica, Coronation Park Accomodation was wonderful, all the locals were lovely, Street Art! Custard Square from Couplands, so many lovely places to eat. Will have to return to spend more time there.

Ashburton is a rural town on State Highway 1 which is often overlooked as a place to stay. However the Southern Alps are half an hour away, there is the Ashburton river, and the coast nearby. This is a peaceful town.

We liked the convenience of having a cabin where we didn't need to bring anything. The pond was really lovely and we enjoyed feeding the ducks (poohs were a bit smelly and sticky though) and playing on the playground. It was a long way out of town though. Going to the toilet in the night was dark and uncovered and the door in the cabin was very noisy and hard to shut.

I wanted to share some positive feedback regarding my experiences in Ashburton. It is a beautiful town that I have enjoyed visiting on several occasions while traveling down south. Ashburton has many appealing qualities that make it an interesting and welcoming destination. One of the standout features of Ashburton is its proximity to the ski fields, making it an excellent base for winter sports enthusiasts. Additionally, the town boasts a variety of excellent eateries and a diverse selection of shops, offering visitors a wide range of dining and shopping options. For a town of its size, Ashburton has a lot to offer, contributing to its charm and appeal. Moreover, the friendly nature of the residents adds to the overall positive experience. The warmth and hospitality of the people in Ashburton make each visit enjoyable and memorable. Overall, Ashburton is a delightful town with much to offer. I look forward to visiting again in the future.
