Ike was responsive to our questions before we arrived and helped us plan our next day's Kumano hiking itinerary based on the weather forecast. The dinner at Ike's minshuku was super tasty, we had a really good time eating and watching Ike make okonomiyaki (really good with lots of veggies which we missed in Japan). Definitely recommend getting the dinner/breakfast/lunch package, made our day after a long day's hike!

Very homely, clean, and comfortable. Host was very responsive and lovely and we had no issues! Please remember this is a traditional japanese architecture home so the walls are quite thin. The guests we stayed with were very respectful and we had no issues. The home is so beautiful and has so much character so it is definitely worth it.

We had a perfect time here, we were a family of three with a 1 year old and the wonderful hostess made the visit fantastic for us. Great japanese cuisine, lovely upper floor which was exclusively ours during our stay. Genuine futon mattresses in a very spacious environment. We really had a lovely time here. Don't miss this gem if you're traveling through.

Great host, multi lingual, went out of way to make sure we had all we needed, even took us to great little quirky restaurant near trail head. Opposite bus stop. Also has electric boot dryers (handy when walking through a typhoon lol) for use. Definitely book ahead for this one if on trail, All modern and clean. Basic Brekkie but ok. Highly Recommend.
Beautiful property perched in the mountains near the start of the Kumano Kodo trail. Simon and his wife were great hosts providing a shuttle up to their house and then again to the start of the trail. The room was traditional and beautifully finished and we even sampled some homemade plum wine!
- Great location for the Kumano Kodo
- Ike and his wife were great hosts, served us a delicious Okonomiyaki dinner and packed lunch for the trek.
- Clean room and facilities
The host was very friendly. He shared homemade plum wine with us, which was super delicious, and he also provided us with some oranges. He also gave us route guidance and shared the bus schedule with us. What I liked most was that the host picked us up from Tanabe Station and sent us from the homestay to Takijiri the next day, so we saved the bus fare.
"The Lodge on the Pilgrim's Way exceeded all expectations. The dinner was an unparalleled experience, a delightful fusion of original Spanish influences like tapas, all made with organic ingredients—truly the best I've had in Japan. The warmth and hospitality of the host family added immensely to my overall comfort. The onsen was a serene oasis with breathtaking mountain views. Breakfast was equally delightful. A perfect 10 out of 10!"
