Travelers on a budget looking to experience a place like a local will enjoy homestays. These simple accommodations are in a private home, where the host also lives. All facilities are shared and in most cases breakfast is included.
The onsen experience was really good. It was a little daunting as the boys and my daughter hadn't been before, but it wasn't hard to work things out. It is however, primarily for and used by locals.
The twin share room was a good size, although priced to match.

Tomo-san is a great host, and made sure that we felt at home. If you have questions don't hesitate to ask him. Everything in the guesthouse is very well thought through. If you're looking for a good place to stay in Himeji, this is it.
This was a unique little slice of Japanese culture with a very good location within easy walking distance of the train station and castle as right within town centre. Lovely host who was helpful and friendly.
