Staying at Shukubo Daishinbo in Tsuruoka, Japan, was one of the most enriching experiences of my trip. This 350-year-old temple inn, run by a Yamabushi family, offered me a unique opportunity to connect with Japan's spiritual and cultural heritage in a deeply meaningful way. The location of Shukubo Daishinbo couldn't have been more perfect. Nestled at the base of Mount Haguro, it served as an ideal starting point for exploring the sacred Dewa Sanzan mountains. Each morning, I had the chance to participate in the rituals led by the resident Yamabushi, which was both a serene and enlightening experience. The blend of Shinto and Buddhist practices, known as Shugendo, is something I’d never encountered before, and it gave me a new perspective on spirituality and nature. But what truly made my stay unforgettable was the food. The meals at Shukubo Daishinbo were incredible, reflecting the best of Shojin Ryori, the traditional Buddhist cuisine. Each dish was crafted with care, using local, seasonal ingredients, including wild mountain vegetables. The flavors were delicate yet profound, and every bite felt like a celebration of the region's natural bounty. The connection between the food and the surrounding landscape was palpable, making each meal a deeply meditative experience. The peaceful atmosphere of Shukubo Daishinbo, combined with the warmth and hospitality of the hosts, made me feel like I was part of something truly special. Whether it was joining the morning prayers, hiking up Mount Haguro, or simply relaxing in the tranquil surroundings, every moment spent here was nourishing for both my body and soul. If you're looking to immerse yourself in Japan's spiritual traditions or just want to unwind in a serene and beautiful setting, I can't recommend Shukubo Daishinbo highly enough. It’s more than just a place to stay—it’s an experience that will stay with you long after you leave.

Yamagata Zao Pension Aplon Stage ligger mitt i ett naturlandskap och erbjuder en fridfull oas. Hotellet ligger bara 2 minuters bilresa från skidorten Yamagata Zao Onsen och erbjuder mysiga rum. the owners are very helpful and friendly. they served us really good breakfast. we felt like home. we will definitely go back during summer.

Yamagata Guesthouse山形ゲストハウス erbjuder boende i Murayama (Yamagata), 5 minuters promenad från Murayama station. Boendet erbjuder ett gemensamt kök och gratis WiFi i alla utrymmen. The staffs are really friendly and helpful, and the place is really comfortable and clean. Not everyday you can stay at school which converted to community center dan guesthouse. Really interesting experience. Too bad that I only spend 2 nights there. Definitely will stay again if I am in the area.

Det charmiga Petit Resort Hotel Der Barte ligger inom skidområdet Uwanodai och erbjuder möjlighet att åka skidor ända fram till dörren, mysiga västerländska rum och middagar med franska rätter. Wonderful stay, very pleasant staff with good communication skills for multiple languages, affordable, clean, great meal service! Would recommend to everyone.

Shukubo Kanbayashi Katsukane ligger bara 5 minuters promenad från pagoden vid berget Haguro och erbjuder rum i japansk stil, vegetariska japanska måltider och gratis Wi-Fi. the kindness of the owner and their effort to speak english. the position of the accomodation close to Mount haguro trek departure.

Pension Puutaro ligger bara 1 minuts promenad från skidorten Zao Onsen och erbjuder rum i japansk stil, en fransk middag och gratis Wi-Fi. very nice owner. Close to rope way (excellent location).

Snowfall Meteor 飛雪流星 ligger i Kaminoyama, 2,2 km från Zao Hotsprings skidort, och har en trädgård, rökfria rum samt gratis WiFi i alla utrymmen. Pensionatet erbjuder familjerum. A lovely and heartwarming place to stay for a winter getaway. The couple that owns this business made us feel like family. Mao and Qu are so kind and welcoming. They treated us like family. They picked us up from the bus station, drove us to a wonderful dinner location (which they recommended), drove us to the ski resort, and helped with all our luggage. I was so happy to meet them and talk with them. The room is just as warm as the owners. The floors are heated and the beds are very comfortable. I wish I could’ve stayed longer.

The owners were very friendly, welcoming and generous.

Zao Pension Aramiya - Vacation STAY 86181v ligger i Kaminoyama, 2,2 km från Zao Hotsprings skidort, och erbjuder boende med gratis WiFi och gratis privat parkering. The food was amazing! I came here for Christmas to see some snow and stayed 2 nights. Both nights the food was soo good and there was soo much. I also had breakfast included and that was good too. The hosts are lovely and even with the language barrier we used translate apps to talk and I had a great time. The house is old and wooden with kerosene heaters, its not super fancy but the blankets on the bed were warm and fluffy, so with a belly full of great food and snow falling outside I slept really well. They even drove me to the bus terminal the day I left. 10/10 highly recommend, especially for the food.
