A charming and well-maintained old guesthouse that was the perfect distance AWAY from the most popular tourist destinations (though you can easily reach them). I really appreciated that this felt like staying in an actual neighborhood of Kyoto. The staff were wonderful - allowing me to leave my bag before check-in so I could head out to explore the area, transferring my bag to my room (unexpected and very kind) and sure to let me know where to find all the heaters if I needed them (it was drafty and a little chilly in certain parts of the house outside my room understandably due to the guesthouse's age and the time of the year- January).
Free tea and coffee available as well as a microwave and dishes if you wanted to eat and drink on a budget.
Host spoke excellent English. Exactly the kind of experience I was hoping for when I booked - I would HAPPILY stay here again. As an FYI - this is an old house, so walls and floors are not particularly soundproof. Take care to be courteous to other guests, especially in the early morning and late evenings.

The place is full of surprises, i.e. onsite onsen, freshly made bread for breakfast, local grocery/convenience store, charcoal grill in the middle of living room and many more. Hiro San (the host) is super nice, and he would think ahead of you and get it done before you even make the ask. It's a nice place for a family size between 4~7.

Very traditional atmosphere. Tastefully decorated. Very accommodating for any requests we made. We asked for an extra futon each as we were not used to such firm bedding. We also requested to move downstairs closer to the toilets for access at night. The bikes were fantastic for exploring the city. We were a little worried about the screeching noise the brakes made, but we stopped into a bike shop and they said that was normal for Japan. The brakes sometimes don't have rubber pads. The laundry was very handy as we are travelling light. I loved the breakfast bagels and plum wine. I also enjoyed chatting with people from around the world- Philippines, Korea, Malaysia, Canada, America, Germany. Everyone was very friendly. The common area had a nice homey feel.

The room was very uniquely decorated and clean. The toilet plays music. The host was incredibly nice and didn't bother us ever. Clean towels whenever you leave the used ones outside the room. The host even offered to drive us to our station after our stay so that we didn't have to walk with our luggage.

Warm and welcoming guest houses are ideal for travelers who prefer laid-back accommodations with a personal touch. Usually family run, these hosts will provide local recommendations and even optional meals. Guest houses sometimes feature a cozy living room or a garden – and are still cheaper than most regular hotels.
