Stunning grounds and comfortable beds. 1000% charming. Really refreshing pool. Super clean. Easy access to the beach, especially with a car. We did go on foot once as well, and this is totally feasible. Juan the gardener and Sophie the owner were lovely. My daughter can't stop talkng about Begeiro, the resident cat.

Andrea is awesome. Ask her anything. She is the advice guru.
The neighborhood is safe, it is a gated community with lots of community support, each hotel has something to offer and they all suggest each other as options. The biggest hotel might have 10 rooms. Lots of houses too.
The beds are comfy, our room had a kitchenette with all the things we needed to make simple meals. There is a freezer too.
There is an AWESOME restaurant and bar on the property. We made our own coffee daily Britt coffee machine pods and a traditional coffee maker. The property does have a simple coffee shop too.
The beds are super comfortable, the porch is great. Pool is perfect!! There is an outdoor shower.
Things to consider:
rent or buy a shade for the beach. I suggest buying one if you are going to be there more than a couple of days. There is a Walmart in San Jose and Liberia. Liberia Walmart is easy to get to, San Jose was a bit busy. The only sort of shade offered at Walmart was the 4 legged pop up. It would work great. The rental shades at the hotel and in town are different than those more like a cloth tarp with legs. They are nice but require a bit of sand and finesse.
Beach Chairs are nice because there are lots of sand critters, nothing dangerous just lots of busy sand crabs. A thick matt or big towel would do the trick
Private beach access is awesome. Many times we had the beach to ourselves. It is a big beach.
The surf is great! Boogie board rental locally is a good idea $40 for a week, if you aren’t a surfer but there are good lessons for surfing for about 40.00. (Aug 24’)
The rentals are dropped off at the hotel or you can pick them up. Andrea can arrange it for you if you would like.
Bring bug spray. The trail to the beach has hungry mosquitoes.
Tips are included in purchases and there isn’t a line to add more. (10%)

We wanted a quiet place to celebrate our anniversary and Hotel Cantarana was just that! At times, we felt like we were the only ones staying there. We loved that it was so close to an amazing beach that we walked every day for sunrise and again for sunset. At times, we felt we were the only ones. We had the pool all to ourselves. There is a restaurant on site and a couple others close by that are AMAZING! The beach is incredible . . . soft, white sand! Andy, at the front desk, was the best! She greeted us with a warm smile and was so helpful. She helped us to arrange a sunset cruise which was spectacular! We surely will be back!

Playa grande was such a relaxing place.
Playa grande was such a relaxing place. The beach sunsets were amazing! Took an estuary tour with Luis right off the beach - private tour for 2 was only $70 and we saw crocodiles, monkeys and amazing birds. Tamarindo is a fun day trip (taking the water taxi, or asking to be dropped off there after the boat tour). There is a cool food truck court at the end and behind the beach that has an iguana walking about. Tamarindo was nice if you like lots of people and lots of bar and food choices but playa grande was so much more chill of a spot. Loved it and will be back! Cantarana cafe had the best coffee and almond croissants and dinner upstairs was really good. Servers for breakfast and dinner were fabulous! The Tortuga was a great spot - with the most delicious fish bites I’ve ever had! Cafe Mar Azul was so much fun- Sunday night entertainment needs a reservation. Such a good price for amazing fish dinners.

Playa Grande is perfect for running or walking on the beach, however not for swimming, snorkeling or floating. On the other side of Playa Grande (crossing the river) there is Tamarindo, a crazy town full of tourists with its own long beach. If you are looking for a laid back place, Tamarindo is NOT where you want to be. Lots of traffic and tons of people walking in the streets and hanging around. Can't imagine what is like in high season. Stores have beautiful clothes but they are pretty expensive. Definitely a surfing town, everyone walks with a board under their arm...lol.

Location, beautiful beach , facilities and great bed !
Lovely responsive employees!
Restaurant next door offered excellent food .
Not sure why everything had to be paid in cash eg car rides, trips etc . That was inconvenient.
One has to have cash on hand as most business was done that way. However we were told only in “ low” season.
The location was small and intimate and easy to access by foot. A car wasn’t always needed.

Beautiful beach line. Great for surfing and boogie boarding.
Beautiful beach line. Great for surfing and boogie boarding. Trees at the beach provide plenty of shade. Long and picturesque shore line is excellent to walk in the morning or at dawn hours. Amazing sunsets.

Nice quiet area.
Nice quiet area. A limited but good selection of eating places nearby. the beach is great for walking, swimming or riding a bike. It does not have shade trees on the beach. Lots of different birds.
Go to Hotel El Manglar to book mangrove estuary boat tour. it is very good. Playa Grande is much quieter than Tamarindo but it is about 40 minute drive if you want to go to Tamarindo.
Great hotel with a really beautiful pool and private entrance to the beach. We booked this hotel as we were hoping to see turtles hatching or laying eggs. Andrea helped us with booking a tour and we saw both a baby turtle and a mother turtle digging in the sand so that was awesome!
The staff is very kind, the hotelroom was clean and the bed was comfortable. The beach was beautiful, we loved how easy accessible it was.
Best thing about this place is the pool though, we really loved it!!
The room was clean and spacious. The food in the restaurant was fantastic. They make the best pizzas. There are some really nice seating areas and a great pool! Great location literally 2 minutes from the beach. The staff were friendly and accommodating and a big shout out to Luis who helped me with my excursions! Great hotel for surfers who want to ride the waves on the pacific coast
Our best stay in Costa Rica so far.
Really close to the fabulous and quiet beach Playa Grande.
The restaurant is high so you can wait for the sunset, with happy hours on cocktails (2 for 1). The restaurant food is amazing and good value for money.
This will be a place that we would remember as a good souvenir.
Thanks!
It’s small with a good pool and restaurant and located within easy walking distance to a fantastic and quiet beach. The beach is great to learn surfing or to run along and to watch great sunsets and pelicans fishing.
