This is not like your generic hostel for backpackers, we stayed in a basic room with shared bathroom facilities and it felt like we were splurging on luxury! Super modern, so clean, fantastic bedding, hot showers with great pressure, complimentary shampoo/body wash, very quiet in off season.
It has some great activities and atmosphere in the main area, my partner played in poker night on Sunday, and every night people from around the town come to hang out and drink there. There’s a pool table, tour desk, pool etc. l didn’t really engage in much activities but loved the friendly atmosphere and things to do.
Also a short 2-5min walk to playa grande beach to surf or hang out. Has free parking (which saved us $10 from parking at playa grande). Has some restaurants nearby that you can walk to as well, although if you’re backpacking and don’t have a car it is quite far from Tamarindo etc so just a heads up you’d have to pay for a taxi etc if you’re interested in doing that. This kind of area is best suited if you want to chill at the beach or surf and that’s about it. We had a car so we could adventure around and outside of the town more so it was great.

Exceptional, situated in a tropical garden in the grounds of a private gated estate.
A short walk to a quiet beach perfect for swimming and surfing.
The in-house cuisine was excellent with fresh seafood and meat with the crunchiest freshest vegetables I’ve ever eaten. 10/10.
Each night they had live music which was a massive bonus. The music wasn’t loud and in your face, more a perfect in harmony with the environment and the guests.
One last thing is the guests, a really interesting eclectic mix of people with a really friendly and interesting outlook.

I was a little apprehensive at first, to sleep in a tent in the tropics with all mosquitos etc but I experienced no issue at all. The tents were clean, a fan was running to keep temperature under control and keep mosquitos away. In fact, I did not experience any mosquitos at all, even not while sitting around the lovely pool or central areas. The garden allows for lot’s of privacy. I also liked the open air shower behind each tent. Breakfast was relatively simple, but happy that the cook even showed up because I was the only guest for 2 nights. :-). The tents were also provided with facilities like a fridge to store cold drinks in and other perishables. I Liked the call of the monkey’s early morning.
Playa Grande is definitely a much more quieter area than Tamarindo’s beach (much more entertainment there), so if you came to find a quiet place; this is the beach where you would want to stay.
Located in front of Playa Grande Beach and 2 km from Playa Ventanas Beach, the Hotel Rip Jack Inn features a sun terrace with swimming pool, a yoga terrace and free Wi-Fi throughout.

This quiet boutique hotel was amazing! Perhaps because it was low season, we found it quiet, super clean and had a very restful sleep. The pool was never packed and access to the beach was amazing! Please be very mindful of the beach as it is a surfers dream - meaning the waves are very rough but you can easily play with the waves if you are a fair swimmer. Beach was basically empty. The resturant is overpriced and not worth the money. Strongly recommend in the area Beach Break Cafe, Pots and Bowls, Cafe Mar Azul and Kike's Place for local amazing food.
Located inside Las Baulas National Marine Park, this bright hotel offers guests free Wi-Fi and an outdoor swimming pool. It is just a 2-minute walk from Playa Grande beach.

We wanted a quiet place to celebrate our anniversary and Hotel Cantarana was just that! At times, we felt like we were the only ones staying there. We loved that it was so close to an amazing beach that we walked every day for sunrise and again for sunset. At times, we felt we were the only ones. We had the pool all to ourselves. There is a restaurant on site and a couple others close by that are AMAZING! The beach is incredible . . . soft, white sand! Andy, at the front desk, was the best! She greeted us with a warm smile and was so helpful. She helped us to arrange a sunset cruise which was spectacular! We surely will be back!

Playa grande was such a relaxing place.
Playa grande was such a relaxing place. The beach sunsets were amazing! Took an estuary tour with Luis right off the beach - private tour for 2 was only $70 and we saw crocodiles, monkeys and amazing birds. Tamarindo is a fun day trip (taking the water taxi, or asking to be dropped off there after the boat tour). There is a cool food truck court at the end and behind the beach that has an iguana walking about. Tamarindo was nice if you like lots of people and lots of bar and food choices but playa grande was so much more chill of a spot. Loved it and will be back! Cantarana cafe had the best coffee and almond croissants and dinner upstairs was really good. Servers for breakfast and dinner were fabulous! The Tortuga was a great spot - with the most delicious fish bites I’ve ever had! Cafe Mar Azul was so much fun- Sunday night entertainment needs a reservation. Such a good price for amazing fish dinners.

Playa Grande is perfect for running or walking on the beach,...
Playa Grande is perfect for running or walking on the beach, however not for swimming, snorkeling or floating. On the other side of Playa Grande (crossing the river) there is Tamarindo, a crazy town full of tourists with its own long beach. If you are looking for a laid back place, Tamarindo is NOT where you want to be. Lots of traffic and tons of people walking in the streets and hanging around. Can't imagine what is like in high season. Stores have beautiful clothes but they are pretty expensive. Definitely a surfing town, everyone walks with a board under their arm...lol.

Location, beautiful beach , facilities and great bed !
Lovely responsive employees!
Restaurant next door offered excellent food .
Not sure why everything had to be paid in cash eg car rides, trips etc . That was inconvenient.
One has to have cash on hand as most business was done that way. However we were told only in “ low” season.
The location was small and intimate and easy to access by foot. A car wasn’t always needed.

Beautiful beach line. Great for surfing and boogie boarding.
Beautiful beach line. Great for surfing and boogie boarding. Trees at the beach provide plenty of shade. Long and picturesque shore line is excellent to walk in the morning or at dawn hours. Amazing sunsets.

Nice quiet area.
Nice quiet area. A limited but good selection of eating places nearby. the beach is great for walking, swimming or riding a bike. It does not have shade trees on the beach. Lots of different birds.
Go to Hotel El Manglar to book mangrove estuary boat tour. it is very good. Playa Grande is much quieter than Tamarindo but it is about 40 minute drive if you want to go to Tamarindo.
The common area was ideal! Nice pool with a big lounge, resting area, common kitchen, everything you would need! Beach is right beside the corner, huuuge spacious and totally empty! There we were like 10 people on a huge beach during the whole day... We went to Tamarindo for one day and quickly rush back! The staff was extremely lovely and helpful to our every need, one can really feel like in a luxury hotel:) Even though some minor inconviniences in the room, would 100% go back and recommend ❤️
Nice vibe, friendly and helpful staff, good location. Top tip for clean and healthy bowls which is just over 10 mins walk away (or a short drive if you have a car). We didn't eat at the hotel restaurant - it's closed on Wednesdays.
The beach is lovely and only a few mins walk from the hotel.
The room was amazing - open to the nature.
The hotel garden is beautiful, lot of plants, flowers, bee hives, even got the visit of animals like monkeys.
Peaceful swimming pool to relax.
Good breakfast.
