It has the best location: 15-20 mins walking from the airport (you won't need a taxi if you doesn't have much baggage), 10 mins to the beach and 2-3 mins to grocery shops or restaurants
Also the Aluger station you will find next to the Municipal Market which is 5 mins walking from the hotel.
As for the hotel, of course it seems a lil bit tired inside, but everything works: you will have a super comfy bed, aircon, free wifi with good signal and even a fridge. On the upper floor there is a dining room where you can get glasses, plates or corkscrew if you need.
Also there are some rooms with nice open balcony so you can get some take away food and chill here.
Also you can ask for a laundry service, which is great foe those who travel with a backpack like me
As for the brekfast, which is included: nice local coffee, super fresh bread, ham and cheese, butter and even peanut butter, hard boiled eggs and fresh local fruits. The best way to start your day. And you will be lucky if the owner will be there , once he brought fresh goat cheese and papaya from the market, it was so nice that you will never get anything better even at 5 stars hotel, I mean it.
As for the owner: Ulysse has perfect English which is a lil bit exotic for Cabo Verde!

The location in the old crater and near the highest volcano is impressive. We stayed 6 days at casa Helena with our 18 months old child and had a great stay. Sicilio and his family are super friendly, they cook delicious food and breakfast. They are always ready to answer questions about logistics (such as airport transfer) or activities (tour of the island, hikes) and to share their experiences. I also recommend Sicilio’s brother as guide to climb the volcano!
EcoFunco is situated in Portela. The accommodation features a 24-hour front desk and parking on-site. At the bed and breakfast, every unit is fitted with a wardrobe.

Beautiful Funco house. Spotlessly clean. Bed comfortable. Perfect location for hiking the volcano. Owners are very friendly and helpful. Card payment accepted (+2%). Breakfast delivered night before for hiking was basic but ideal for the hike. Reasonable requirements for power and water consumption, given the location.
Featuring quiet street views, Pensão Repouso Alegre Turismo e Aventura in Portela provides accommodation, a garden and a terrace. The property has mountain and inner courtyard views.

This is a very nice place to stay for couple nights. Quiet, comfortable. Breakfast was included and I have asked for it at 6am, so the Lady just left it from the evening (coffee in a termopot). Also you can ask for a dinner, which is really good, super tasty (Ive got a fish with rice and veggies for 900 escudo). And also you can ask for some wine (industrial or craft homemade, about 200 per glass).
The place has not many reviews but it's seems super new, means you will have also super new bathroom which is nice bonus for staying.
As for the transfer: you can book the place in Alluger with the room booking. The way from Sao Filipi is 50-60 mins and costs 1000 escudo.
As for the trekking:
1. The location is the best, right next to the start of few trekking routes
2. You can ask the owner for a guide, just ask for someone local who is actually based here in Caldeiras and not in Sao Filipe. As for the Pico Grande you will definitely need a guide because it's super tricky route. For the Pico Grande the usual price is 6000 per person but it's could be a discount if you are in group
3. Also you can walk by yourself (without guide) for couple places: e.g Pico Pequeno (it's now that far) and also you can walk to the Forest Monte Velha (about 5 kms till the entrance to the Forest) or even to Mosteiros (about 16 kms in total, 10 kms at the normal road and 6 kms are a bit difficult, inside the forest - not the easiest trail but it's possible)

It was a great expérience staying in the pension. Dimingas and her family are very friendly and welcoming and you get a family feel (which was a nice change after staying in an hotel the week before). Zuka is a great guide if you want to visit the island and climb on the volcan, and he speaks perfect French, English and Spanish. The family was very flexible about the check out time, and also arranged a taxi everytime I needed one. The location is very close to the city center and great restaurants, as well as shops.
Quiet place and very nice staff. The room was really dark, but the rooftop is really nice and has a lot of shade. You may cook also for yourself on the rooftop where there is a kitchen and a bar.
Nice size apartment (for 2), located slightly out of town, but only some 10 minutes walk to the city centre. The kitchen is basic but sufficient to prepare a small meal (even has a basic washing machine we could use), but lacks kitchen towels. The main bedroom has an AC (won't reach the living) and a comfortable bed. Living has great views over the sea and the Island of Brava. WiFi works great.
We had a lovely stay, the ecolodge is beautifully situated in nature. While you have the privacy of your own little cabin, you can socialize with other guests at dinner or during the day in the restaurant area. The pool was nice and quiet. The food was delicious! You can tell they try not to waste any food and are mindful of energy and water use. The staff was really helpful.
The guesthouse is clean and spacious. Nice terrace to chill and a beautiful view for the sunset. Albino is a great host, helps you with whatever you need.. highly recommend
Beautiful location, quiet and great retreat for proper rest with a stunning sunset. The bungalows are private with a balcony. Great location to stay if you are visiting the vulcano, however it takes 1 hour plus driving to get there.
