A recently renovated ryokan, Kameya Hotel offers accommodation in Tsuruoka. The ryokan features a spa experience, with its hot spring bath, public bath, and open-air bath. I had an excellent view of the Japan Sea. My room was big and spacious and felt unique with traditional tatami and wooden floors. The private onsen with sauna and dry room was wonderful! I regret not using it both nights. The staff was helpful and friendly. I enjoyed their self serve coffee/beverage station with tables overlooking their beautiful Japanese garden on the terrace. They also offer cute little treats to eat with your drink which I thought was so lovely.

Extremely beautiful hotel, very friendly and accomodating staff, great onsen, sake bar, library, and you get your steps in as it‘s fairly big. Next time I‘d like to try the in-room massage service. We have stayed at a Shigeru Ban designed place in Karuizawa before, but at around three or four times the price of what we paid here. While that one felt very secluded, this one had a bit of a communal feel to it. Breakfast was nice (not too many vegetarian options, but clearly labeled), and the breakfast area was gorgeous.
