Not what it was several years ago.

Not what it was several years ago. We stayed here 7yrs ago and used to go to the main square to buy fresh ingredients, mint, tomatoes etc. to make meals - now the square if full of fake argan oil, fake football shirts and mass produced items. It already had those stalls but there is nothing of interest and all aimed at tourists. Riad staff advised us against eating in the main square as its not safe or good quality, and we actively avoided the square whilst we were visiting. There are too many motorbikes now, everyone has one and drives through tiny side-streets/ alleys which is a nuisance and is very dangerous. You can't just wander through the markets as every 20s you have to move for a motorbike which is not very relaxing. A lot of the locals and taxi drivers dislike this and warned us about this problem. The food is much better in other parts of Morocco, it tastes better and is better priced outside of Marrakesh. We found the food lacked seasoning and was disappointing. The airport is really disorganised and has been this way for years, you have to spent 2+ hours in customs when you arrive. When going home you have to have a paper boarding pass and get two stamps and spend loads of time in various long queues getting your passport checked, it seems very inefficient as no other airport in the world seems to do this. Worth going to see for yourself but having compared from 2017 and 2024 we don't ever plan on going back to Marrakech specifically, but other parts of Morocco are beautiful and worth visiting.

Food is great and I loved the atmosphere.

Food is great and I loved the atmosphere. I loved having a trip to the Sahara desert, it was one of the best experiences in my life. Hotel staff was amazing and super kind, as our tour guide. What I didn't like is that in Marrakech you always need to have your guard up for petty crime and *helpful locals* from the souks that will engage in conversation with you trying to lure you to a shop or to give you directions in the Souk and then demanding for money. They will tell you that they have seen you somewhere safe (i.e. Jardine Majorelle if you are coming from that direction) but that is likely not true. The Medina is a bit of a labyrinth, but best to use Google Maps and ignore advice, even if you might feel rude to do so. As a solo female traveller you do stand out and are more vulnerable.

We loved the architect and traditional Riad where you find many everywhere, service is excellent in Marrakesh. they are humble, polite and patients with our questions and requests. accommodate tourists and are flexible. Money goes a long way there and shopping for health creams oils etc... is very appealing and watching them producing it is amazing in some places. Best Argan oil and prickly pear oils for different types of skins and issues, as well as their naturally perfumed soup and face creams like the Jasim, Rose, and Gardenia is glorious

Marrakech is suited to various types of holidays, whether it’s a party holiday with friends to a baecation to celebrate a special occasion - there is something to do for everyone. There are so many restaurants and hotels for every single budget which is great. The city is built around tourism so hotel staff etc are more likely to speak English and Arabic than French. Card payments are accepted everywhere. It’s best to get your hotel to order you a taxi as local taxi often overcharge tourists. I would highly recommend doing a quad bike tour and hot air balloon activity. One issue is there is too much begging. Everyone asks for tips whether or not they deserve one.

One of the best places we have ever stayed! Everything about the Riad is amazing. The interior is beautiful, the atmosphere relaxed; two pools, roof top terrace, lovely, comfortable rooms. The team went out of their way to be helpful, especially Amine. They organised airport transfers, private tour guides, meals, massage etc. Nothing was too much trouble. I have stayed in some top class 5 star hotels, Riad Misria exceeded the service, ambiance and comfort of many these 5 star hotels. Relaxed and unpretentious.

It was like staying at your friend's house, where they give you a key and say "come and go as you please". Definitely a home from home. Sure, stay at a 5 star swanky hotel if that's your bag, but if you really want to immerse yourself in local culture, stay at a traditional riad like Tizwa, and you will gain hugely from the experience.
