The full day Lan Ha Island with kayak and fish farm was fantastic. We preferred staying at southern end of Cat Ba than Halong Bay. The local market with fresh produce and seafood was a great experience.

Cat Ba is amazing.
Cat Ba is amazing. I stayed in a homestay inside Cai Beo Floating village and woke up to the amazing views of Lan Ha Bay. The boat tours (with kayaking and swimming) are stunning and a great way to learn about the landscape, history, and local culture of the fishing villages while seeing the hidden gems of Lan Ha Bay. The hotels are cheap, the food is good, and there are many opportunities to connect with fellow travelers.

I did a night tour my first night to see the bioluminescent plankton -recommend.
Would have visited the National Park but was sick - heard from others that it was worth doing.
My last day was an overnight cruise - recommend again.

Cat Ba is a wonderful base to explore Lan Ha Bay and go on a day cruise, a great alternative to the busier Ha Long Bay. Cat Ba Island is a bit harder to get to, but the tourist area is lovely, lots of stores, restaurants, boardwalk, lots of fun.

I was so glad we chose to stay in Viet Hai Village instead of Cat Ba Town region. We came to Cat Ba to experience the nature and tranquility and got just that in Viet Hai Village. Perfect location for taking a boat day trip round Lan Ha Bay for kayaking, swimming, fishing villages and caves.
Easy to hire a bike cheaply from Viet Hai to get around, or the homestay hosts could organise golf buggy to drive you around. No cars on the island.

Cat Ba was very beautiful.
Cat Ba was very beautiful. I would say, however, that you should always check the local news and tourist reviews to see if they have cleaned up the floating trash before you book your trip. Since Ha Long Bay became a popular tourist spot many years ago, a mountain of garbage and plastic waste has been polluting both Ha Long and Cat Ba bays. The government does respond with increased collection/cleaning efforts when the tourist complaints get loud enough, so always a good idea to check before you go.

This is a nice hotel to stay if visit Cát Bà. The price is excellent, the beds are good, nice and clean bathroom, very well located in the center. Tony is a very nice host, always with a smile and ready to assist you. I was going to stay for 2 nights and I stayed 5. I also booked the tour with them for a very good price and it was very nice. Cát Bà is a very lovely island, with amazing beaches and lovely views and really deserves a visit.
We loved this hotel so much we actually extended our stay. The room was spotless, the beds were comfortable, the view of the sunset from the balcony was amazing. The hotel is right by plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops. The staff were welcoming and friendly, and they could not have done more to ensure we had a great stay on Cat Ba island. Julie, in particular, was great throughout.
Very nice small hotel located in a small village just outside of Cat Ba city, to get a more genuine feeling of the island.
The cabins are simple but very nice.
The home food is simple but very nice and tasty!
Our host, Minh was super helpful, always ready to help us organise our stay and make our vacation the most pleasant possible.
I think this is the only place in Cat Ba Town that actually has chill Island vibes to it - all others are either typical hotels no different than those in any Vietnamese city, or huge posh resorts. The rooms are spacious and clean, nothing fancy, but ok. The bar/pool area is super chill and a great place to relax.
The host, Ben was very gracious and helpful with info about Cat Ba Island. Room was big and comfortable.
Located at Cat Ba town so we could get food easily. Rented a scooter to go about from the hotel - so convenient!.Went for a sunset cruise at Lan Ha Bay (arranged with Ben) and we enjoyed it immensely.
