FAQs about hotels in Ghent

A Historical, Cultural and Culinary Gem

Located in the Flemish region of Belgium, the beautiful medieval city of Ghent is not only a city of history, but also a romantic place to visit. The city is full of hidden historical, cultural and culinary gems that you can easily discover.

The Gravensteen or 'Castle of the Count' is a deceptively enchanting sight dating back to the Middle Ages. Constructed by Philip of Alsace, the count of Flanders, it's partially surrounded by a moat and beautifully restored, and hosts an interesting museum about the history of prison life.

Part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, the Belfry of Ghent is a medieval tower overlooking the Old Town centre. Saint Bavo Cathedral and Saint Nicholas' Church are the city's other two towers, with St. Nicholas' Church being one of the oldest landmarks in Ghent (known as Gent in Flemish).

Enjoy a relaxing walk in the picturesque medieval streets and stop at one of the charming traditional restaurants for Belgium beer and a classic Flemish meat stew with French fries. Local delicacies include the popular Belgium chocolate and the purple jelly-filled candies called the 'noses'.

Antwerp International Airport is 52 km away, while Brussels Airport is 55 km. Just book your hotel, guest house, apartment, or B&B through Booking.com and discover everything this stunning city has to offer.

We stayed one night, and were able to see a lot and check a lot of things off the list. However, we feel staying 2 nights would have been better for not being so rushed. There is a LOT to see and explore.

    Very beautiful, lots to do.

Very beautiful, lots to do. A bit crowded on a Saturday, so consider visiting during the week if you're able. I stayed about 2 days, and could certainly have done 3, maybe 4. Must do: try cuberdons (a purple sweet) and waterzooi (a hearty chicken or fish stew). See St Bavo's cathedral and the Ghent altarpiece. Foreigners must also try Flemish and Belgian specialties (stoverij/stoofvlees, Belgian beers and chocolates, friet, etc). Additional highlights: the fine art museum (MSK), the Belfry, all the other churches, e.g. St Niklaaskerk and St Jacobskerk (which also had thought-provoking modern art when I visited). The Gravensteen (sometimes called "Castle of the Counts") was interesting, if you can tolerate the goofy audioguide. On Sunday, there are outdoor markets for flowers and antiques before noon, at which point the markets close and the rest of the city wakes up. On Saturday, there was a live public performance on the bells of the Belfry. I didn't get a chance to visit the modern art museum (SMAK), or any of the many antique shops (I had heard good things about one called Wunderkammer). I also found the public transport to be outstanding for such a small city. Trams are frequent enough (especially where lines overlap), and paying is easy: just tap your contactless card on the white card readers.

Ghent is one of the most beautiful places we've visited. Its charm and quaintness cant begin to describe it enough. People are friendly and helpful. Just sitting by the river is an unforgetable experience. Every corner you take is more beautiful than the other. Ghent is a very walkable city. A boat trip is also a must.

Very friendly host and nice, spacious rooms. Very calm, we slept great there. The breakfast was very nice: we received a breakfast basket every day with items we had chosen (e.g. croissant). The place is well located for those keen on both exploring Belgium and Ghent. It's a ten minute walk from the city center and about the same to make it to the station. Several options nearby as well to eat.

This is a great budget hotel. The rooms are small, clean and well thought out. You probably won't want to spend much time in them though - but that's okay if you're here to sightsee. The lobby has lots of seating, a bar, outdoor seating/dining and has a warm friendly vibe. The breakfast was good with plenty of options. From the hotel it's a short ten minute walk into the centre of Ghent.
