Ghent River Hotel, hotel in Ghent

This hotel blends an industrial history with elegant décor and modern facilities. Ghent River occupies several former factory buildings, less than half a mile from the Botermarkt.

Great location, quiet hotel, easy to get around, nice atmosphere, lovely view of the river. We always had a “do not disturb” sign on the door and still, fresh towels/toiletries were put in a basket for us outside of the room every day - loved that!

The room was large and comfortable and we slept well on the beds. Also the staff were so welcoming and kind right from the beginning. We arrived well before checkin hoping to just store our luggage but no the room was ready and they let us in. Also breakfast was fabulous: lots of great breads and pastries, big variety of fruit and you could order freshly cooked items!

FAQs about hotels in Ghent

A Historical, Cultural and Culinary Gem

Located in the Flemish region of Belgium, the beautiful medieval city of Ghent is a city of history and romance. It's full of hidden historical, cultural and culinary gems that you can easily discover.

The Gravensteen or "Castle of the Count" is a deceptively enchanting sight dating back to the Middle Ages. Constructed by Philip of Alsace, the count of Flanders, it's partially surrounded by a moat and beautifully restored, and hosts an interesting museum about the history of prison life.

Part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, the Belfry of Ghent is a medieval tower overlooking the Old Town centre. Saint Bavo Cathedral and Saint Nicholas' Church are the city's other two towers, with St. Nicholas' Church being one of the oldest landmarks in Ghent.

Enjoy a relaxing walk in the picturesque medieval streets and stop at one of the charming traditional restaurants for Belgium beer and a classic Flemish meat stew with French fries. Local delicacies include the popular Belgium chocolate and the purple jelly-filled candies called the "noses".

Antwerp International Airport is 32 miles away, while Brussels Airport is 34 miles. Just book your hotel, guest house, apartment, or B&B through Booking.com and discover everything this stunning city has to offer.

It's a very beautiful city and compact enough to discover on foot. Lovely buildings interspersed with great bars & restaurants. They seem to take beer very seriously - poured to perfection for each specific beer in the correct glass, usually placed with the label towards you. We walked all over the centre of the city at day and night and it always felt safe.

A beautiful city with friendly, helpful people. Lots of interesting, historical architecture. Bars & restaurants are typically inflated city centre / tourist prices that you get anywhere. We will return to see more of the city during better weather.

We travelled in winter so our initial plans were around daylight hours. Once there the nighttime atmosphere was just as good to enjoy and feel safe. Too many great eating places to list - we picked a street each night and tried all sorts of cuisine choices- so good! Certainly lots to see, do and explore. Lots to see on any budget too. There are enough tall spires to keep you oriented to where you are because it’s easy to keep rambling down different streets.

The Christmas market was only being assembled so I couldn't comment on it. The stunning towers of the medieval city are one of the draws of this university city, which is a vibrant place. The virtual reality tour in the Cathedral is not to be missed as the Gent Alter panel is a 'must see'.

Ghent is undoubtedly one of the most charming cities in Belgium, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and modern amenities. Personally, I find it far more captivating than Brussels and Bruges. Its well-connected and efficient transportation system makes getting around the city seamless and stress-free, allowing visitors to immerse themselves fully in its beauty. The culinary scene is equally impressive, with a wide range of restaurants serving everything from traditional Flemish dishes to innovative international cuisine. Whether exploring its picturesque canals, admiring the stunning medieval architecture, or simply indulging in its vibrant food culture, Ghent truly stands out as a must-visit destination in Belgium.

This is hands down my favourite place in Belgium. We visited 4 different cities, but Alphabed and Gent were diffrent and, in my opinion, the best! The street is quiet but just 5-7 minutes walking to the city center and all the best places in the city. We will def. come back! The staff was communicative, the place was spacious and clean, the bed was comfy and the kitchen (common area) had great design and amenities. The entire place was packed with natural flowers too, a very nice detail.

This location is an area where a lot of students are around. The university is close to it. You have to walk a bit to go to the town center. Close to it is a parking lot where you can park for 9,50€ a day. That’s cheap for Belgium. The personal was really kind to us. The room was cozy and the bath was really nice. Also the breakfast was really good and you can make wishes for the special things you want.

Very friendly host and nice, spacious rooms. Very calm, we slept great there. The breakfast was very nice: we received a breakfast basket every day with items we had chosen (e.g. croissant). The place is well located for those keen on both exploring Belgium and Ghent. It's a ten minute walk from the city center and about the same to make it to the station. Several options nearby as well to eat.

Maarten is an amazing chef and went above and beyond for us while we were there. Would recommend trying out their restaurant while you are there. We will go back to their bed and breakfast if we ever go back to ghent belgium.
