Loved stepping away from all the busy tourist areas. Booked a private onsen which was needed from all the walking. Great chance to relax. Lovely walk by the river and cute little town. Definitely off the beaten track. Plenty of food offered if you are wanting to experience the traditional Japanese cuisine.

Kaga-onsen is a small town that unfortunately offers little in terms of tourist attractions, aside from its numerous luxurious ryokan featuring onsen. A couple of days is more than enough to fully explore the area and enjoy some nature excursions.
The restaurant is of high quality, boasting an extensive menu that surprised us with the variety of dishes. The Japanese-style breakfast may not suit everyone; as Italians, we're used to lighter, sweeter breakfasts, which is quite the opposite here. Still, it’s an experience worth having!
The onsens are stunning, just like in the photos. They are not the first we have visited, but I must say these pleasantly surprised me, especially the outdoor baths.
Additionally, I enjoyed chatting with some elderly gentlemen during our soak. Despite my limited Japanese and their few English words, we managed to have a pleasant and unusual conversation!
The kindness of the staff is truly valuable.
I recommend a short stay to relax between city visits.

We had an exciting, wonderful one-night stay at this beautiful and luxury Ryokan hotel, which is situated directly on the seaside with a marvelous sight on the sea and the Japanese Alps in the background, directly from our room and from the traditional hot Onsen bath (open the whole night!). The dinner and the breakfast in your private “séparée” were extraordinary, Japanese kitchen at it’s best, and the personal of this family-run Ryokan was extremely friendly and accommodating. They have also a bus shuttle from Kagaonsen railway station, which is a stop of the new Shinkansen prolongation opened only in March 2024

Amazing stay all around. The staff were extremely friendly and the hot springs by the river were fantastic. The meals were by far the best japanese food I've ever had. Located in a beautiful town with lots of shops and a nice walking trail along the river. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a traditional onsen ryokan experience.
The location was ideal. The room was comfortable well provided with snacks, fruits and drinks. It had a great river view, and it was relaxing hearing the river water flowing. The attached open air onsen was really great and allowed us to soak in the warm water from the hot spring and enjoying the view of the river and trees. Very relaxing. Dinners and breakfast were provided and very elaborate and well done; it was very good. And thanks for the bento set which was thoughtfully packed for us when we checked out to go to the airport.
I appreciate the Ryokan and Private onsen space - spacious, adequate facilities for a night or so. Staff are polite. Free bus shuttle available to and fro the station. Walking distance to nearby shops and restaurants (5-10mins). You get to experience the real rural area and explore at your own pace.
