The homemade Japanese breakfasts were phenomenal and a very good value. Almost unbelievable. Each day was different, with a healthy balance of vegetables, proteins, and carbs (rice). Authentic, and served by a wonderful woman.
Located in Hikone, Kiyotaki Ryokan offers Japanese-style accommodations, Japanese home-style cooking and free Wi-Fi, a 20-minute walk from national treasure Hikone Castle.

It took us a long time to find a ryokan online that might offer a traditional and peaceful atmosphere at reasonable rates, and our search paid off. Ryokan Beniayu is somewhat remote and is not near busy tourist attractions, but for relaxing, watching birds, enjoying the lake (fantastic sunset view from the bath and room), and tasting some delicious foods this was better than expected. And our private outdoor bath was wonderful, too! We appreciated being welcomed so warmly. A nice stop between Kanazawa and Kyoto, even in the waning winter.
Experience culture authentically with a stay at these traditional Japanese-style accommodations. Sleep on the floor (on a futon roll) in a room furnished with tatami flooring and sliding doors. Guests can often expect access to a communal bath, plus a complimentary Japanese garment called a yukata.
The place is very conveniently located right next to the castle and the shopping street. The kitchen is well equipped (there were even paper towels and Saran wrap, which most hosts forget about), and there is nice big western-style dining table. The tatami rooms have bed mattresses, so they are softer than normal futons.
The bathroom was clean and modern, and has a nice washing machine (with a second one and a drier outside!).
Very beautiful property! The onsen is luxurious and is the best that I've ever been too. Kids are allowed in the onsen too. The breakfast and dinner were excellent. I wished we have booked another night.
The Ryokan is located pretty close to everything, Hikone Castle and Hikone station can be reached by foot in about 10-20 minutes, restaurant, convenience stores, etc. are also pretty close. The family running the Ryokan was very very friendly and accommodating to me. Everything has been explained to me, but I also speak Japanese so mileage may vary. The bath was very nice and Japanese style. Everything I needed like Toothbrushes, shampoo was available. I liked the room, it was a Japanese style tatami room with a comfortable Futon bed.
I loved everything!! It was amazing - the room, the fantastic onsen overlooking the lake, the super helpful and friendly staff who went out of their way to come and pick us up from maibara, the sensational breakfast and dinner, the yukata you get to wear around the hotel, the free udon and drinks in the evening. This place is really fabulous - i’d rate it more than 10 if I could!
Everything.
This place is magical, the rooms are so big and Japanese style, I had a room with 2 Tatami beds, a living room, a fridge, a beautiful space for sit and enjoy the garden.
You can use the onsen for free.
The owner gave us a lift to the train station, which was so kind.
If you stay here, make sure to eat some skewers in the restaurant that is just at the front.
Overall, this makes my experience unforgettable.

Lovely traditional style budget ryokan near a large strip of restaurants. There is an onsen which you can use privately as long as no one else is using it at the time. The manager is awesome, he offers you a lift to the station when you checkout which we greatly appreciated. There are some bikes you can rent for free, but make sure you ask early. It was great value for money.
We expected a ryokan and this is what we found. The 3-room ryokan was well equipped with futons, microwave and fridge. The ryokan also offers a small but pleasant onsen.
Staff were very amiable and friendly, though their English was supported by Google Translator.
The place is a bit more than 1km from Hikone Castle and good restaurants.
Staying at this Ryokan was one of the best days I had during my vacation. It's a bit from the main station, but absolutely worth it. Also they will offer to drive you to the station when you check out for free. Great service! The room was huge and so comfortable. The private onsen can fit several people at once and I used it twice because it was so good. Also they can lend you a bike for free. I want to come back to Hikone just to stay there. And I would gladly pay more for the room. Book this place as you will not regret it.
Wow wow wow. I did not expect to love this ryokan as much as I did. There's an onsen downstairs that you can use, free bikes to use (I'm pretty sure there's only 2 though), and the owner gave me a lift to the station! Really exceeded my expectations and an excellent place to stay on my last summer holiday tour.
