One of the few tidy small towns left in the Orange Free State. Business owners attend to the cleaning of streets in the absence of supportive municipal services. Everyone we met during our stay were very honest, helpful and sincere. There are at least three places where you can enjoy tasteful food: Bokmakierie Guest house serves excellent classy meals on prior booking. Fouriesburg is a lovely town, very typical of the Eastern Free State. There are many pretty sandstone houses, and a few restaurants that are frequented by locals and tourists alike. The town is close to Clarens, Ficksburg, Rosendal and the Golden Gate National Park. Clarens is closer to Golden Gate, but extremely busy during weekends and if you don't like crowds, rather stay in Fouriesburg.
I am linked with the University of the Free State which has wonderfully polite students and staff. The Bloemfontein art gallery and botanical gardens were a pleasure.

Great relaxation trip that can be taken for a weekend or for weeks. Lots of things to do for all. Shopping at the local stores or white river rafting for more adventurous kind. Romantic picnic stops as well as amazing hiking trails. Cowboy style horse back riding or cattle runs that's truly unique. Wonderful food spots and locally made craft beers and spirts Cheese and wine tasting is a must for all those food lovers. As well as the iconic golden gate Highlands national park Wonderful local people that are welcoming and so helpful. A place that you want to stay at for a little longer each time. A must see, you'll understand once you get there. Little Stellenbosch in the free state. Oh don't forget the mini Tuscan villa on the hill even for a one night stay over.
Clarens is truly the jewel of the Free State. It is located in a lovely valley between the mountains. The town is small and full of interesting little stores that sell everything from antiques, collectibles and art to you name it! There are quite a few art galleries and some of the works on display by renowned artists are simply breathtaking! There are also two breweries selling craft beers, ciders etc which are very popular and there is a choice of eateries where one can enjoy anything from pancakes and waffles to steaks and platters to satisfy most visitors palates. Overall a quaint and quirky place to visit with more than a good supply of accommodation for visitors to the area. I highly recommend it!
Clarens is a lovely little Free State town just waiting to be explored. If you have not been to Clarens it is such a Pity - Lovely Shops to Browse and Restaurants to please your Tastebuds. If you are in the area make a point of Visiting Clarens.
People of South Africa were very friendly ; the status of the Bloemfontein ZOO is disgusting. The place needs to be closed and the poor animals must be released to a better place. The staff at the ZOO didn't show any interest in the animals and guests...I am very disappointed and angry :( Bloemfontein is a very unique city, clean and beautiful. I will definitely visit the place again and would recommend it to my friends and family. Haak Free State !!!
I was very impressed by the level of service and professionalism by the staff at ByTheWay Guesthouse. It was for the first time for me to be in the Free State, they kept on calling to find out if I am driving and traveling safe. The best place to be, which this time I will definitely visit now for a holiday. Rooms were almost exactly as seen of the website.

Our weekend stay in Clarens was nothing short of magical. Nestled in the picturesque Free State of South Africa, this charming town offered the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure for our mother-daughter getaway. From the moment we arrived, we were enchanted by the stunning mountain views and the warm, welcoming atmosphere. The accommodations were cozy and well-appointed, providing us with all the comforts of home while allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the area.
When visiting the free state university this hotel is perfectly located. Safe parking, spacious room, all very clean and comfortable bed. All you need! People are very friendly, which adds to the plus. In the next comment we suggest some improvements that would add to the value of the hotel as it is worth staying.

very nice and comfortable place. we had a family room and it was just as advertised. pretty clean, and the staff were friendly. didn't get a chance to use the pool as it was a pretty chilly day but looked pretty good and just as expected in the photos. good security and in a nice quiet neighbourhood. didn't get a chance to use the restaurant/ food facilities, but it's pretty close to some shopping centres by car so decided to eat out locally
Wonderful place, perfect view on the landscape, peaceful. Restaurant with à good qualité of service and thanks to the chef for our meal.. it was delicious
