Direct flights are limited, I have tried going via Moscow and Kiev, I am considering Istanbul as another option. Beware of being encouraged to visit expensive restaurants, especially on 8th March - when everything that can be price-hiked will be! (Around double!) This time I have explored a little more of the Odessa region - although I still have not used a tram! It is difficult to imaging how anybody lived in the Catacombs, even with German soldiers around. The part that is "open" is not easy with a torch, in darkness it would be terrible. Personally I hate enforced "tips" - especially when a waiter has the nerve to complain that he thinks it is not enough!!! There are many ways of eating on a budget without going to McD. It is also quite possible to get by with virtually no Russian! (In Odessa people usually speak Russian rather than Ukrainian) You have to expect uneven pavements and cars parked up the kerb. Try to get a number for a taxi service, then you can get around for around 100UAH (£3), otherwise a taxi at the airport is likely to ask for over 500UAH! There are many museums to explore, but 2 that I tried to see, were not open yet.
