You save a lot of time and traffic being located in Karatu than Arusha the morning of your safari! It has a charm. Not as big or busy as Arusha. With a guide or somebody who knows the town you can have a nice time there if you have free days to spend. The market, the lake, the local neighborhood around interesting to see. No doubt save an extra day or 2 to spend here before or after your safari!
